Incredibly grateful to the @herdocs team for hosting me in Warsaw and showing our film @thewomanwhopokedtheleopard to such a beautiful audience.

It was an honor to hear people say how grateful they are to the festival for bringing them a film made by an African filmmaker after all the propaganda they’re treated to about our part of the world.
And even more wonderful to connect with not only Polish people but with cool people from Belarus, Ukraine and the region.

How totally unexpected to hear people say that @stellanyanzi speaks to them and the liberation struggles in their countries, so far from home.

Thank you so much for this gift. I’ll never forget it.
And thank you to the guest experience team who received us and made our stay so memorable.
Thank you @impishphil for the photos and the company. taken in Warsaw, Poland by @nitumwesiga

Programme Highlight ✨ THE WOMAN WHO POKED THE LEOPARD (dir. @nitumwesiga)

Thur 29 Oct, 20:30 @filmhouse_edinburgh

Unapologetic and revolutionary — THE WOMAN WHO POKED THE LEOPARD is an intimate portrait of Ugandan poet-academic Dr. Stella Nyanzi (@stellanyanzi), who defies state repression with bold acts of resistance.

Through performance and protest, Stella confronts dictatorship and patriarchy. She navigates threats, imprisonment, and exile to reclaim autonomy both for her nation and her own family.

Um futuro distante. Uma identidade em risco. Uma história que nos obriga a olhar duas vezes.

Em “How to Forget Your Name: The Last Barbarian”, uma jovem imigrante da África Negra tenta sobreviver numa realidade futura marcada pelo ultranacionalismo e pela exclusão.

Uma narrativa provocadora que nos leva a questionar identidade, pertença e o preço de um futuro que promete ser luminoso.

Conheça esta curta na Competição KAFUKA 2026.

We’re coming to Kenya y’all!!!

This East African premiere is one of our most exciting premieres for our film @thewomanwhopokedtheleopard

As an Ugandan filmmaker without so much support, our director @nitumwesiga perhaps received her biggest support from Kenya. From our first funder @docubox_eadff to our team members in post production and to all the wonderful Kenyan filmmakers who showed up for our team, Kenya is special to us.

Not to mention the comrades who provided security support and impromptu hospitality whenever needed.

We are so proud to be premiering at @nbofilmfest this October! For the screening at Alliance Française, there will be a Q&A including our protagonist Stella Nyanzi @stellanyanzi and director Patience Nitumwesiga among other members of the team.

We invite Ugandans who are attending NBO to come join us and let’s talk and celebrate East African cinema.

We can’t wait to see you all! taken in Nairobi, Kenya by @nitumwesiga

Danke Köln. ❤️

I come back from sick leave with overwhelming gratitude.

To Sebastian and the entire AFFK team — you are absolute legends. Thank you for the unprecedented African hospitality, for taking such good care of us.

To the city of Köln — thank you for loving us in such strange and beautiful ways. Every screening sold out. Every audience hungry for our work. What a gift.

To the filmmakers from Africa and the diaspora — thank you for the embrace. It was an honour to commune with so many artists I deeply respect.

To my incredible team — we did it. A film that seemed to move Köln. I’m told it’s the first time the Jury and the Audience have awarded the same film in the festival’s history.

But my biggest honour was hearing audiences stay after and ask me to tell @stellanyanzi they are so lucky to live in the same world as her. That they are glad she exists. Raw and human and breathing.

Thank you, Jury, for seeing everything we worked so hard to preserve. What an honor to be awarded by you.

What a beautiful omen to return to after months of not being well.

The Woman Who Poked The Leopard

So happy to be a part of the phenomenal film program by the @jalicollective icollective at The Jali Film Weekender, a five-day celebration of Black, African and diaspora film, extended realities and more at multiple venues across Edinburgh.

This year’s programme theme is Rebellion, which manifests across both cinematic forms and narratives told, as well as who audiences will be introduced to both on and off screen.

We are especially happy to be a part of this program celebrating rebellion because the film showcases how Dr. Stella Nyanzi defies state repression with rebellious acts of resistance.
