Wax on | Wax off.

Carefully combining heat and mechanical action to remove wax residues from patches on the reverse of the painting, from an earlier restoration campaign.

A thread-by-thread approach, carried out under magnification, to restore structural integrity with minimal visual disruption. by @nitzanbandconservation

In progress of cleaning.

After cleaning surface dirt, the aged varnish layers are removed using tested solvents and mechanical action, to improve visual legibility.

Work is carried out with close attention to the behaviour of the original paint surface and its sensitivity to any intervention. by @nitzanbandconservation

Surface detail under the microscope during overpaint removal, showing the non original paint in an area of loss, and canvas weave through a loss to the paint and ground layers.

Close observation is essential in distinguishing original material from later interventions, to guide treatment decisions. by @nitzanbandconservation
