art! Knoxville, TN
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I spent about 13 hours camped out in the lobby of the {RE} viewing Black Mountain College conference trying to figure out live how to animate (with paper) to a sound score. Here's what I came up with!

The track is Nerve Endings by @atomwrecbob, in which he plays bass clarinet inside a parking garage. The first sounds you hear are of the parking garage before the instrument comes in.

I never work abstractly or to a sound score (usually the opposite) and I learned a lot and can't wait to do this again!

Thank you to my collaborator:

I really had to pump myself up to do a solo road/tent camping trip from Tennessee to Vermont and back again, however I unexpectedly had the most wonderful time. Now I am a tent camping road trip evangelist, which I will be sure to tell you the benefits of for much longer than you want to hear if you make the mistake of asking me about it!!!! by @nizmoco

Concept art for a shadow puppet animation I'm working on this year! I am picking up an idea I had the first semester of grad school (second slide). I guess some ideas just kind of bother you until you finally do something about them! by @nizmoco

I had such a lovely three weeks as the Shenandoah National Park Artist in Residence! The park has so many diverse landscapes and it's huge- even with hiking every day I feel like I'd have to come back here again and again to see it all. I really recommend going to a National Park and staying awhile, if you can! The peace gets into your bones, and you start to see how the landscape is changing constantly with the seasons. This park is also a fascinating combination of old and young- the one billion year old Appalachian mountains, and this relatively young park that not all that long ago was farmland! There are apple trees and remnants of homesteads all throughout the park.
Thank you so much for having me @shenandoahnps and @snptrust! I had such a creative and restorative adventure! by @nizmoco

Most of the time being an artist can be kind of lonely, working in a room by yourself, slogging through lots of details and work just like any other day in the office. But on occasion, making art is a surprising and brilliant confluence of so many wonderful people and circumstances!

Our revival of Wayang Katalistrik was a HUGE joy to create with incredible musicians and puppeteers, including @julia.larocque7 @im_so_bread @carriebasscallahan @lynlumplings @museum_of_infinite_outcomes as well as Laura Crowe, Josh Whitaker, and Michael Wiley. Jonathan Adams and Putu Gede Sukaryana wrote a thrilling live score using Gamelan instruments and analog synthesizers. These folks were all so generous with their creative energy and time, and it was very moving to see what we could create together.

Thank you to @knoxvillecommunitymedia and @amosoaks for having us at the KCM fiftieth anniversary celebration, and for providing such a gorgeous venue and awesome audiences. It was also exciting to share the space with the delightful cacophony of the installation by @kenalirangkaipakai ! The puppetry for this project was generously funded by a workshop grant from the @jimhensonfoundation

But most of all, thank you to everyone involved for helping me remember why we make art at all!!

WAYANG KATALISTRIK! Knoxville TN
Our shadow puppet epic with a breathtaking live instrumental/electronic score is being performed twice in the @knoxvillecommunitymedia 50th Anniversary celebration! This puppet show is about the Wampus Cat, an Appalachian cryptid, caught in the cross hairs of humans and technology over decades in East Tennessee! Catch it Friday at 9pm and Saturday at 4pm!

We will also be sharing the space with Javanese installation artist @kenalirangkaipakai / Lintang Radittya, who is building a hyper local installation around our show!!!

The puppetry in this show is thanks to a generous workshop grant from the @jimhensonfoundation ! Support for the instruments is provided by the Bailey Family. Thank you to KCM including us in the festival!!
And thanks to @colehancock.art for the poster! by @nizmoco

Everyone's famous Wampus Cat returns for the Knoxville Storytelling Festival this June! Rehearsals are beginning and we are looking for one more shadow puppeteer to join our ensemble! You do not need previous puppetry experience, and this would be fun for someone who is an artist or performer of any kind who doesn't mind crawling around on the floor a bit. Plus you'd get to work with truly some of the nicest people! There is even a small stipend thanks to a grant from the Jim Henson Foundation! 🌞If you're interested, dm or email me and I can give you dates and more details! nyssacollins(at)gmail.com by @nizmoco
