As NY Climate Week comes to a close, we’re reflecting on the people and partnerships that make progress possible here at home.

New Jersey is full of people doing serious work for climate. This evening was about bringing more of them into the same room.

Ahead of Climate Week NYC, @dukefarms, a center of the @dorisdukefdn convened leaders across government, conservation, clean energy, environmental justice, research, philanthropy, business, culture, and community for conversation, connection, and a little more shared momentum.

Due to the impending coastal storm, Island Beach State Park and Barnegat Lighthouse State Park will close for all use at dusk today, Friday, Sept. 25, and remain closed throughout the duration of the storm.

Both parks are expected to remain closed through Sunday. Before reopening, park staff will assess storm impacts to ensure the park is safe for visitors.

Updates on reopening will be shared on New Jersey State Parks social media channels and through the Island Beach State Park and Barnegat Lighthouse State Park email lists. Current Fall Foliage Conditions — Friday, Sept. 25 🍃

As temperatures begin to cool down, New Jersey will soon start showing off its fall colors. The leaves will begin to transform the Garden State into a colorful display of reds, oranges and yellows.

New Jersey Forest Service staff are beginning to see some early signs of normal leaf necrosis, or the natural dying of leaf tissue that occurs as part of the seasonal transition. The signs of fall are particularly noticeable at higher elevations in the Vernon Township area and near High Point State Park in Wantage and Montague. Based on current observations, peak fall foliage in northern New Jersey is expected around mid-October, with peak color potentially arriving about a week earlier at higher elevations.

The results are in! 🔎

This past August, we hosted the first annual BioBlitz at the historic Princeton Battlefield! This is the start of a multi-year project tracking the biodiversity of the Battlefield before, during, and after the ecological upgrades taking place. 🌳 ICYMI: New Jersey marked Climate Week by planting a milestone tree in Trenton.

DEP Commissioner Ed Potosnak joined @njconservation, local officials and community leaders to plant the 1,000th tree through Trees for Trenton, a community project funded through DEP’s Natural Climate Solutions Grant Program.

The milestone also highlighted $9.4 million in new funding for eight Natural Climate Solutions projects across New Jersey. These projects are helping restore ecosystems, strengthen community resilience and capture carbon.

In Trenton, the final tree was a London plane tree planted along South Clinton Avenue, an area vulnerable to urban heat island impacts.

Climate Week is a chance to highlight the work happening across New Jersey to prepare communities for flooding, extreme heat, storms and sea level rise.

Explore the ADA-accessible adventure playground taking shape at the inaugural segment of New Jersey’s newest state park in Newark.

Once complete, the playground will feature slides, swings, climbing features and a water play area. Its design is inspired by a historic icehouse and ice block conveyor belt that once operated on Lake Hopatcong. Ice harvested from the lake was stored at the icehouse before being loaded onto trains that traveled on the former rail line where the future park is being built and transported the ice to ports along the Hudson River.

The play area is located within the future Newark Central Activity Center, a community gathering space that will also feature ADA-accessible, family-friendly restrooms; a performance stage with an expansive lawn area to accommodate audiences of varying sizes; exercise stations; a multi-sport court suitable for basketball, street hockey and futsal; and other amenities.

The Newark segment of the park is expected to open in 2027.

The New Jersey Economic Development Authority is overseeing construction in collaboration with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

Last night, DEP shared the results of its recent investigation of the Aeromarine Industrial Park, including the Keyport Sanitary Landfill. The investigation, supplemented by independent investigations, has not found any indication that contamination from the site is impacting surrounding neighborhoods.
