We woke up to very good news at North London Collegiate School today.

The Sunday Times Parent Power Guide 2026 has named us Independent Secondary School of the Year 2026 and in the Parent Power league tables, NLCS is ranked the No. 1 girls’ school in the country.

The Sunday Times Parent Power School of the Year award is the most prestigious recognition in British education, and we are delighted that this reflects not only academic excellence, but the depth and breadth of life at NLCS. It also shines a light on the power of girls’ only education that we will forever be proud to champion. In addition to this, we’ve also been named

• Independent International Baccalaureate School of the Year 2026
• Independent Secondary School of the Year in London 2026

This is a huge honour that recognises our commitment to delivering an ambitious educational experience to every girl. From higher mathematics to ethical questions about AI, from eighteen different sports to national girls’ chess titles, from VEX Robotics world qualifiers to ambitious drama productions, our students are encouraged to think hard, try things out and enjoy the process as much as the outcome.

In the Sixth Form, the IB Diploma and A levels sit alongside Surge, our start up academy, where students develop an entrepreneurial mindset. As a girls’ only school, every captain, robotics lead, editor and head of society is a girl, which shapes both daily life at Canons and the alumnae community that follows.

We are especially grateful to our colleagues for the care and energy they bring to school life, and to our parents for the trust they place in us, along with our ONL community for their continued support.

🎬  Introducing our new school film and promise: Making Waves since 1850 🎬

The confidence, the curiosity, the sense of purpose that defines an NLCS student—it’s not something you can script. So when we set out to make our new school film, we didn’t just want to show NLCS, we wanted to capture it. From start to finish, this film was shaped by the voices, energy, and ideas of our girls and we couldn’t be prouder.

We were delighted to welcome world-class choreographer and artistic director of Rambert, Benoit-Swan Pouffer to NLCS for the third edition of our Education Futures Dialogues, this time exploring the theme of Beauty in Learning.

Speaking to staff, external practitioners and students in Years 8, 12 and 13, Benoit took us behind the scenes of the creative process, from the importance of resilience and collaboration to his experience adapting Peaky Blinders for the stage.

It was an opportunity for our girls to hear first-hand how ambitious ideas evolve, why creativity requires the confidence to take risks and make mistakes, and how collaboration can transform what we create.

Our Education Futures Dialogues bring inspiring thinkers and practitioners from education and beyond into conversation with our community, encouraging them to be curious, challenge assumptions and explore big ideas from new perspectives.

Thank you, Benoit, for sharing your perspective on creativity, learning and beauty.

This week, Year 9 travelled to Ypres and the surrounding battlefields of the First World War, visiting a number of significant sites connected to a period of history they have been studying in school.

The programme included visits to Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Tyne Cot Cemetery and the battlefields around Ypres, where students explored the scale, complexity and human impact of the conflict.

Among the most memorable moments of the trip was attendance at the Menin Gate Last Post Ceremony. During the ceremony, students laid a wreath on behalf of the school, joining visitors from around the world in an act of remembrance for those who lost their lives during the war. by @nlcs1850

🎶 The NLCS Music Festival 2026 is officially underway!

Students from across the NLCS family have arrived in London for a weekend of music, collaboration and new friendships. After a warm welcome, our young musicians spent the day rehearsing together, preparing for an exciting weekend ahead.

We're looking forward to seeing their hard work come to life over the next few days.

On Saturday, we welcomed aspiring educators, recent graduates and education professionals to the Beryl Gilroy Forum, a day dedicated to celebrating Dr Beryl Gilroy’s legacy while supporting the next generation of teachers.

We were honoured to welcome Marcus Gilroy, who opened the day by reflecting on his grandmother’s extraordinary impact and sharing how proud and delighted she would have been to see so many people gathered to explore careers in education.

Delegates then heard from a brilliant keynote panel featuring Andria Zafirakou MBE, Dr Jasper Green and Samy Etienne, expertly chaired by Robin Street. Through honest conversations and personal experiences, the panel explored different routes into teaching before answering questions from attendees at every stage of their journey.

Following lunch, delegates took part in a series of practical workshops led by Dr Jasper Green, Humphrey Waddington, Marie Carrick, Matthew Sossick, Samy Etienne, Jai Majithia and Dawn Gamble, covering everything from teacher training pathways and personal statements to interview preparation and the recruitment process.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended, shared their expertise and helped make the day such a success, and special thanks to Jess Bedi for her vision and leadership in continuing this important work.

Black History Month is underway at NLCS, with students engaging in a wide-ranging programme of talks, assemblies and society events throughout October.

The month opened with an assembly from Mr Etienne, who drew on experiences from a recent visit to Kenya and Tanzania to explore ideas of community, belonging and the importance of looking beyond first impressions.

Students also heard from members of the Afro-Caribbean Society, whose assembly examined the influence of Black communities on British culture, from music and fashion to sport and popular culture.

A Senior Societies talk from journalist, author and Africa correspondent Ore Ogunbiyi explored the history and impact of Nigerian migration to Britain, alongside broader themes of identity, representation and international journalism.

The week's events concluded with a Food & Music Party, bringing students together through food, music and conversation.

Throughout the month, students will continue the theme of Honouring Our Communities through a series of society-led discussions exploring Black history, culture and influence across a range of subjects.

In memory of Dame Esther Rantzen DBE: Esther joined North London Collegiate School in 1948 at the age of seven and spent ten lively years here studying, writing for the school magazine, directing her own theatrical productions, and famously avoiding the tennis courts.

She went on to become one of the most recognisable figures in British broadcasting, best known for That's Life!, which ran for over 20 years on the BBC. As the founder of Childline and The Silver Line, she changed the landscape of support for both vulnerable children and isolated older people, shaping national conversations around care, protection, loneliness and dignity in death.

Our thoughts are with her loved ones. A formal tribute will follow in due course, but for now, we remember her with immense pride and lasting gratitude.

If you wish to share any messages of condolences, please do send them to onla@nlcs.org.uk and we will pass these to the Rantzen/Wilcox family. by @nlcs1850

Two members of the NLCS community are taking their talents to the global netball stage, representing the USA and Nigeria.

Current student Emerson was recently selected for the USA Fast5 squad an electrifying, high-speed format of netball featuring five players per side, shorter quarters and a unique scoring system that puts speed, skill and attacking flair firmly in the spotlight.

Joining her on the international stage is ONL Aramide, who proudly represents Nigeria.

Speaking about what it means to represent Nigeria, Aramide said:
“Playing for Nigeria is a privilege beyond words. It is an honour to be able to represent the country alongside people who share that same passion and pride as I do.

I wouldn’t be in this position if it weren’t for the constant support and opportunities I was provided with at North London Collegiate School. The entire PE department played a fundamental role in my success on the netball court and I will forever be grateful for that.”

Huge congratulations to both Emerson and Aramide on these fantastic achievements.
