My name is Walter Lynch, 35 👴🏻. I’m from a family of fisherman in a small town on the Avalon peninsula of Newfoundland, Canada 🇨🇦. I’m what society would call a introvert , which Is probably subconsciously why I prefer to work alone. I was never the typical guy who liked sports or hunting. I preferred cars, motocross, mountain biking , and building things.

Nearly all my adult life was spent working in the oil and gas industry. From the oil Fields of Alberta to the off shore oil rigs of Newfoundland. Although this was my job , designing and building was my passion.
Iv been designing/ building homes since the age of 20. For years I did it on my days off while working in Alberta, along with the use of subcontractors. Fast forward to 2016, my father suddenly passed which made me look at being away from home for such long periods of time differently, sooo I quit my job in Alberta. I then took a position in the offshore oil thinking it would give me more time home to do things I was passionate about, I quickly realized it was still not enough for me.

September 20, 2020 came along and everything changed .That day I unfortunately had a bad table saw accident leaving me loosing a finger and severely damaging two more on my left hand . Oddly, this was exactly the kick in the pants I needed . When faced with the possibility of not being able to do what I enjoyed at all , I decided that was Enough pushing off what truly made me happy. In 2020 I made a plan to make this my full time thing. 2021 I started the biggest challenge of my life which was restoring the first home that started this account“The Brigus Biscuit Box” it was a way of proving to myself I can still do everything I could do prior to my injury .

A friend suggested a instagram page to document the process, and here we are ! 3 years later and 8 projects deep!

Closing the door on the workshop storm door project. Sort of… 😂

Yesterday I took the time to clue these up and get them to the finish line. 🚪The final two coats of paint are on, the ring latches and stained glass are installed, and I sealed all the upper edges of the interior braces with a clear sealant.

I made sure not to seal the bottoms, so if any water does find its way in, it has an opportunity to drain back out. I also sealed around the glass for a little extra protection against water getting in.

Don’t worry—the sealant goes on white, but dries perfectly clear.

Now I’m just waiting for the strap hinges to arrive in a couple of days. Once those are here, these will be installed and ready to take on whatever winter throws at them. ❄️

The traditional storm doors have been trimmed to length, the breadboard ends flushed up, and a rain groove added to the bottom. The glass has been trimmed and the guides installed, and finally, the first coat of paint has been applied.

Once this coat is dry, they’ll get a good sanding followed by two more finish coats. After that, they’ll be ready for the hardware and installation.

With storm season coming, it was the opportune time to build a set of traditional storm doors for the workshop.

All custom milled spruce with beaded detail, breadboard ends, traditional tenon assembly, and a stained-glass peephole to finish them off.

A little more work to dial these in, and they’ll be ready for a couple coats of paint before installation. 🤘🏼

In 3 days, it’ll be 6 years since the table saw accident that left me with a heavily damaged left hand and one finger less. 🤘🏼

Above my table saw in the shop, I keep the actual piece of wood I was cutting that day.

A reminder of just how fast 💩 can happen.

There’s even still a little 🩸 on it. 😅

Every time I look up at it, I’m reminded to respect the tools, stay focused, and never get too comfortable.

Six years later, I’m still building. 🔨

Drywall is the point where you finally start to get a true sense of how a space is going to feel.

And I’m happy to say the Outport Modern project is feeling really good. The spaces are starting to come together, and it’s exciting to see the vision becoming a reality.

Nice to see some drywall going up on site at the Outport Modern project!

Both homes have now been insulated, and the drywall has been delivered.

For the insulation, I tried something different on these homes that I haven’t used before — BIBS (Blow-In Blanket System).

This system involves densely blowing loose-fill insulation into the wall cavities. With BIBS, you can achieve around R-23 in the walls, making it roughly 15% more efficient than traditional batt insulation.

It’s a nice upgrade for these homes, and one the new owners will reap the benefits from for years to come.

The power of some good groundwork never ceases to amaze me. 🌿

There have been many delays on the Outport Modern project, with trades being far busier than usual this year as they deal with the aftermath of last summer’s forest fires.

But things are finally starting to take shape, and it’s looking fantastic. 🤩

It’s quite the transformation from the empty field that stood here just a few short months ago.

Prepping some wall panels with some red guard waterproofing membrane that will be in the bathroom. I like to rebate the bottom edge to go over the tub flange and waterproof the back 6” up. This keeps everything flat and water tight. This a primer coat which is 1:1 mix of water and red guard . Once this is dry ill give it 3 full coasts
