Every so often something happens that fills my heart with such amazing gratitude.

For months now our daughter has been devoted to a job completely different from her nursing calling.

Working for the most talented and truly good man, Jack Jackson dog photographer, she joyfully gets up pre dawn, and assists with his shoots.

Yesterday, he sent me a note about his story.

Jack, there isn’t a single day that Christine doesn’t have something lovely to say about her work with you.

To work in an environment of mutual respect and admiration is such a gift.

Of the many films at @Tiff_net (Toronto International Film Festival), ‘A Girl Unknown’ is the standout masterpiece for me. Commandingly directed by Zou Jing, ‘A Girl Unknown’ follows a Chinese girl from the age 6 to 18 who experiences multiple identities, great loss and upheaval. I will offer minimal plot points to avoid spoilers.
Set in the 1980’s, while fictional, she is presented as one of one hundreds of thousands of infants and girls abandoned as a result China’s One Child Policy. The fluid pacing and brilliant cinematography (Liang Zhongqiang) frame the environment as an extension of JangJang’s heart.
It begins in joy at 6 years old (Cao Ruofan): wild; playful wonderment;spirited ;in a loving world of exploration. Tragedy strikes. We are in a compressed strange urban place. Yet amid these stark shifts there are key elements of absolute beauty - and therein is the through line - while the Foster mother (played exquisitely by Shen Jiani) attempts to create attachment to a deeply wounded detached child, Juan searches for her identity always observing. In her adolescence, Juan (her name has been changed three times by now) is played by Li Gengxi -an unforgettable performance of grit and grace.
A Girl Unknown is deeply moving and gratifying.
As an adoptive mother of an older child, I have a personal reason for championing A Girl Unknown admittedly. But I still choose this film on the basis of its calibre alone, and Zou Jing’s storytelling.
However I am grateful it has given voice to an important universal truth: all foster/adoption comes from a place of loss (likely for all parties to a degree) but certainly the child, even an infant.

Yet the gifts of an adoptive family outshine the loss in the end we hope if we hang tight.
And this is our hope throughout A Girl Unknown.

I will say to @zoujingfilms, How often has our little family sat in wordless gratitude, looking out on a shore. We have chosen each other and thankful for our resilience.

As with most of my friends, I am devastated at the passing of genius, Light filled, inspirational Dolly Parton.
I came to love her in my twenties when Late partner LV and I saw her champion the fight during the AIDS crisis risking - and receiving- a backlash from many fans. Indeed her support of “Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt” was massive as well as encouraging so many to join in on ‘Red Hot + Country’ to raise funds for AIDS research.Know that so many of my friends now thriving with a Positive status may not be in the lives they enjoy, without this extraordinary woman who from her childhood, in an impoverished Smoky Mountain home filled with music, followed those powerful notes as they rang out in the night sky. I imagine with no electricity, she saw every star, yet she knew her destiny. Her writing in both songs - 2500+ chart toppers by many artists- and writing are both critically authentic to the human condition and rival any philosopher.
She knew the power her talent held, had unwavering Faith, but also believed in the value of gratitude, humility, and critically both graft and benevolence. Yet, perhaps to me, her greatest gift was to celebrate each and every one of us, not despite our differences but because of our differences.
The greatest honour we can give Dolly Parton is for us to take up her song. #dollyparton by @nm8trx

Happy Pride! Thank you so much to my dear friends and family for your support as Pride & Remembrance Run donors and just as cheerleaders as well! Every year brings a challenge and a gift. This year was no different. I am so very grateful today for everyone.

Thanks to my friends who already donated to my very late to game Pride Run fundraising I posted on Facebook.

This year I’m dedicating the run to my Mum and a dedicated runner, who lived to 101 and is seen here at 99. She became stalwart in both her Lutheran congregations in London and Saugeen as an advocate for Affirming inclusion of 2SLGBTQ+ people.

Even if you can’t donate, know that as my friend, and family, both born and chosen you give me tremendous hope and life every day.

May the Fourth be with You!

I can never forget so many things on this day but today what stands out is my dear Rod Kelly ‘s last May the 4th, watching Empire Strikes Back on a portable DVD player in Mount Sinai Hospital, twelfth floor.

He still felt such joy in it and knew every word.

Now Rod in completely ethereal form can venture among the stars.
Fancy that. Just the thought of him delighting in space travel at a whim makes me smile. I wonder if his infectious laughter would ring out in space?

“Good Lord! You don’t believe in *that* do you?” Rod might say.
Or? He perhaps he might not.

I waffle at my own vision of what happens after death. I have seen so many friends pass. Some with greater ease than others. It has been a true gift to be so trusted. Is there anything after? Does each person’s belief come true? The faces I have watched as they have left this world leave me pondering.

In the resulting quiet, after the intensity, there is an aching loss. Grief doesn’t always soften over time. It simply becomes less frequent. As my perspective on life deepens as years pass, I wish he was here and I could see his flashing eyes and hear his response. He would be as luminous and quick as that of a light saber. His Force will forever be strong.

May the Fourth be with you!.

Captured on one of the most inspiring days of my life, this is a cherished photo of Mum standing tall in the Alhambra, Granada, Spain. Mum in her mid/late eighties, my wife and I had chosen to take her to her cherished Spain. In the sunlight, all the bells tolled at noon from literally dozens of Granadian churches while we, high above in the cool rooms of Alhambra y Generalife, were enveloped by a serene tranquility crafted from reflecting pools, walls adorned with intricate scripts and mathematically precise ceramic mosaic patterns. The balance of visual rhythms of light and shadow, and pattern and openness was so mindfully evident I was gasping at every turn. All fashioned so long ago, as a testament to the thoughtful refined brilliance of its creators from Islam. #alhambra #memories #mum #repostfavepic by @nm8trx

The last time we were here for a CBC #TheDebaters taping (US friends look for it on podcast) it was literally the *night* before everything shut down for Covid 😂. No wonder there are a fair number of mask wearers tonight. I literally dropped mine on the way 🤦‍♀️ not because of Covid but that other virus I do *not* want to catch. So looking forward to laugh, again, as I had improv today. A good day today. To feel that delicious suppression of laughter on a stage saying something ridiculous. And now the lights dim. How lucky I am. Thank you for being patient with how absent I am on here. I have been writing a lot. Will share soon. by @nm8trx

Both a bad subluxation and crippling migraine today.

but seeing another legal triumph in the US, (release of 5 yr old and father), and hearing of again more lawyers resigning long held positions instead of carrying out objectionable actions I am so grateful for the heroism being shown from lawyers right now.

They are risking becoming their own, and their family’s lives receiving death threats every day.

*When* the US gets to the other side, they must be acknowledged professionally and publicly. ❤️🤲❤️
