When I chose P.E. as an O-level subject, coming from such a small nation, little did I know that before the age of 35, I would have worked as an S&C coach with 11 athletes who would eventually qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio, Tokyo, and Paris.

I feel honored, grateful, and forever hungry for more.

To the experts: my only suggestion is that we first learn to walk as a nation, with someone qualifying for the Olympics, before we start talking about medals.

Women’s football: what separates top-half teams from the bottom half? Faster, fitter and stronger for their size.

New paper out in led by @nmcsportsperformance as part of his DProf. He tested 87 players from all eight clubs in the Maltese Women’s Premier League, midway through the season.

Top-half players were quicker over 10 m and 30 m and hit higher top speeds in matches. They covered 45% more on the Yo-Yo IR1, jumped 4.6 cm higher and pulled 9% more force per kilo on the mid-thigh pull. Raw force, body mass and BMI were similar in both halves.

Anaerobic speed reserve showed the biggest gap of anything we measured. But sprint time lined up more closely with jump height and strength per kilo than with ASR. My take is on slide 7: use ASR, just never on its own.

It’s a snapshot, so these are associations, not proof that any one quality wins matches. Slide 8 covers what it can’t tell you.
