The application window for the Request for Proposal for Tribal Education Technical Assistance Centers is now open!

We’re seeking proposals for a Tribal Education Technical Assistance Center to support Native American student success from early childhood through higher education. This work builds on statewide Tribal leadership efforts and House Bill 280, which established dedicated centers to strengthen Indian education, expand capacity, and provide technical assistance in partnership with Tribal governments and education programs.

For FY27, NMHED is accepting proposals for one center serving the Navajo Nation region. Tribal colleges and universities, American Indian programs at New Mexico higher education institutions, and tribally controlled organizations with strong experience serving Native communities are especially encouraged to apply.

Deadline to apply: Monday, October 26, 2026.

🎡 Looking back on a great day at the @nmstatefair!

Last month, we hosted colleges, universities and community partners from across New Mexico for Pathways to College & Careers Day at the @NMStateFair, bringing higher education opportunities right to Main Street.

Students and families had the chance to learn more about tuition-free college through the Opportunity and Lottery scholarship, adult education programs, financial aid, career pathways, and programs available at colleges and universities across our state. 🎓

With students exploring their options, families asking questions, and our higher education community sharing the many ways New Mexicans can continue their education and build their future, it was a great reminder of just how many opportunities are available right here at home.

Thank you to all of our higher education and community partners who helped make the day possible, and to everyone who stopped by to learn, connect and explore what’s next.

We’re proud to help open doors for New Mexicans and connect students and families with the resources they need to reach higher. 💚 taken in EXPO NM Home of the New Mexico State Fair by @nmhighered

Language access is healthcare access. Secretary Rodriguez joined @unmhsc for the Summit on Spanish-Language Education for Health Professionals. The event brought together physicians, nurses, researchers, students, and community members for an important conversation about the role of Spanish-language education in preparing the current and next generation of health care professionals.

In New Mexico, our languages and cultures are an important part of who we are. For patients and families, having a health care professional who can communicate in their language can help build trust, create understanding, and ensure they feel seen and heard throughout their care.

The secretary shared a personal perspective on why this work matters. When we prepare more bilingual and multilingual professionals, we are strengthening New Mexico’s health care workforce and saving lives.

Thank you to UNM Health Sciences Center for bringing together students, educators, health care professionals and community leaders for this important conversation. taken in Albuquerque, New Mexico by @nmhighered

Secretary Rodriguez joined virtually the New Mexico Educational Assistance Foundation’s Annual FAFSA Training to support high school counselors as they prepare for the upcoming FAFSA cycle and continue helping students access the financial aid they need to pursue higher education.

Scholarships are a key decision maker in a student’s ability to attend a college or university. Since 2022, thousands of New Mexicans have benefited from financial aid programs like the Opportunity and Lottery Scholarships which covers 100% of tuition costs and help make higher education more accessible to students across the state.

Last week, Deputy Secretary Trujillo joined a panel discussion for the Aspen Ascend Forward with Families Forum: New Mexico, bringing together student parents, university partners and community leaders for an important conversation about what it takes for student parents to succeed in higher education.

Student parents are balancing the responsibilities of pursuing a degree while also caring for their families. Their experiences across higher education can look very different, and understanding those experiences is an important part of building systems that meet students where they are.

Throughout the day, participants discussed better supports for student parents, what resources and partnerships are needed, and how institutions and communities can create pathways that help parents reach their educational and career goals.

Dr. Amber Gallup, Adult Education Director, also participated as a speaker and shared insights into the journeys student parents take across the higher education landscape, highlighting the different experiences, challenges and opportunities they encounter along the way.

Supporting student parents means looking beyond enrollment and asking what students and their families need to persist, complete their education and build a stronger future.
Thank you to everyone who brought their experiences, ideas and commitment to this important conversation. taken in Albuquerque, New Mexico by @nmhighered

¡Aquí estamos! ¡Y aquí seguimos! ❤️

This Hispanic Heritage Month, the New Mexico Higher Education Department is celebrating the extraordinary diversity, history and future of our Hispanic and Latino communities. We also want to highlight the power of higher education to support generations to come.

New Mexico’s Latinidad contains multitudes. We are descendants of families whose roots in this land stretch back centuries. We are immigrants who came generations ago and families building new lives here today. We carry different histories, traditions, languages and experiences, but together, they are part of what makes New Mexico’s Hispanic community so rich and distinct. There is no single way to be Hispanic in New Mexico, and that diversity is something worth celebrating.

New Mexico has the highest percentage of Hispanic undergraduate enrollment of any state. At several of our universities, about half or more of bachelor’s degrees are awarded to Hispanic students. And most of our colleges and universities are federally recognized Hispanic-Serving Institutions.

That is something to be orgulloso about, because when the students who make up the majority of our classrooms have the opportunity to succeed, New Mexico succeeds.
To kick off Hispanic Heritage Month, we commissioned this original poster by Albuquerque artist JonSanchez, celebrating the many pathways our students and families take toward higher education. Whether the destination is a certificate, an associate degree, a bachelor’s degree, graduate school, or a new career, we want every New Mexican to see higher education as a place where they belong, and a future they can claim.

Our histories are here. Nuestras historias están aquí.

Our languages are here. Nuestros idiomas están aquí.

Our families are here. Nuestras familias están aquí.

Our dreams are here. Nuestros sueños están aquí.

And our students are going places, especially when they decide to stay home.
¡Adelante, Nuevo México! 🎓

Last week, Secretary Rodriguez joined @uofnm for the ribbon cutting of the new Police Department facility on campus.

Investments in public safety are investments in our students and communities. Dedicated facilities and resources help ensure that students, faculty, staff and community members have a safe and welcoming environment to learn, work and engage on campus.

College is getting more expensive across the country, leaving more families asking: Is a degree even worth the cost?

In New Mexico, we’re asking a different question: What if cost didn’t have to be the barrier?

That’s why we made tuition-free college a reality for New Mexicans. Because education isn’t just an investment in a student; it’s an investment in our workforce, our economy and the future of our state.

No crushing tuition bill. No choosing between an education and decades of debt. Just more New Mexicans with the opportunity to learn, earn and build their future right here at home.

Thank you, @native_forward, for inviting us to participate in the Central New Mexico Student Success Convening this August. 🎓

Deputy Secretary Trujillo and Indian Education Director Nathana Bird participated in a panel discussion highlighting the importance of addressing students’ basic needs, expanding access to higher education, and connecting students with the resources and support they need to thrive throughout their college journey.

Financial Aid Outreach Coordinator Chandler Farnsworth also shared information about New Mexico’s tuition-free college programs and the financial aid opportunities available through the state. Providing students and families with clear information about these resources is an important part of ensuring that cost does not stand in the way of pursuing a college education.

Events like this create valuable opportunities to learn from one another, share resources and strengthen the partnerships that help New Mexico students access higher education, persist through college, and prepare for successful careers.
