In Nigeria, especially in the northern onion-producing states such as Kano, Sokoto, Kaduna, and Kebbi, farmers and traders traditionally store onions in well-ventilated structures, commonly called onion stores or onion barns. The aim is to keep onions dry, allow air circulation, and reduce rotting and sprouting so they can be sold when market prices improve. #pfi #YourFavouriteFarmer247 #agribusiness #onions by @nna_paschal

Happy new month.

Are you wondering why your young seedlings are wilting, losing vigour or struggling to survive in the nursery despite regular watering? The problem might not be your seeds or fertiliser. It could be excessive heat and direct sunlight.

During El Niño conditions, rising temperatures expose young seedlings to serious heat stress, leaf scorching and rapid moisture loss. This is why shade netting is an important investment in nursery management. A properly selected shade net helps regulate temperature, reduce excessive sunlight, conserve moisture and create a more favourable environment for healthy seedling development.

My advice is, don’t allow excessive heat to destroy the investment you have made in quality seeds. Protect your nursery with the right shade net and give your seedlings a better chance to thrive. #PFI #elnino by @nna_paschal

If you are in Southwest Nigeria, the dry season presents an opportunity to consider tomato production, but the decision to plant should be guided by agronomic conditions and market realities. Reduced rainfall allows farmers to exercise greater control over water application through irrigation. However, successful production depends on more than water availability. High temperatures can affect flowering and fruit setting, while poor irrigation management, nutrient deficiencies, and pest and disease pressure can reduce yield.

I always advice to start with proper soil assessment, select varieties suited to your production environment, establish a reliable irrigation system, and develop a sound crop nutrition and protection programme. Equally important is market planning. Assess demand, identify potential buyers, estimate production costs, and understand the price risks before investing. Remember, high tomato prices do not automatically translate into high profits. Profitability comes from combining sound agronomic practices with effective cost management and strategic marketing. For farmers in the Southwest, now is the time to assess your production conditions and plan your next move carefully. At Paschal Farms International (PFI), we believe successful farming starts with informed decisions, not assumptions. #PFI #tomatoes by @nna_paschal

During one of my agricultural extension visits to a rural farming community, a farmer asked me a simple but important question “Oga, I keep hearing about El Niño. What exactly is it, and how will it affect my farm?”

I explained that El Niño is a natural climate phenomenon that occurs when parts of the Pacific Ocean become unusually warm, influencing weather patterns around the world. For farmers, this can sometimes mean changes in rainfall, longer dry spells, or higher temperatures, depending on the region. But here is something every farmer needs to understand, El Niño does not affect every location in the same way. In Nigeria, we must pay attention to local weather forecasts rather than assume that it will automatically bring drought or poor harvests. I also reminded him that although we cannot control the weather, we can prepare for its effects.

As agricultural consultants, our job is not just to tell farmers what to plant. We must also help them understand the risks and make better farming decisions. The truth is, successful farming is not just about planting and waiting for harvest. It is about understanding the environment, anticipating challenges, and preparing ahead.

At PFI we believe that better agricultural knowledge leads to better farming decisions and, ultimately, stronger food security. #PFI #elniño by @nna_paschal

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Dr. @betta_edu by @nna_paschal

Yesterday. we started setting up our habanero pepper nursery at Paschal Farms International. Before thinking about harvesting, we must first get the foundation right. From choosing quality seeds to preparing the right planting medium and managing moisture, every little detail matters. Our goal is to raise healthy seedlings that will establish well after transplanting and give the farm a good start.

At PFI, we understand that good farming is not just about planting seeds, it’s about getting the little things right from day one. We plan, we grow, and we manage every step of the process. #PFI #habaneros by @nna_paschal
