The Guinness “Surfer” advert, released in 1999, is widely regarded as one of the most iconic commercials of all time. Directed by Jonathan Glazer, the ad follows a group of surfers waiting patiently for the perfect wave. As it finally arrives, the crashing water transforms into powerful white horses, symbolising the intensity and anticipation of the moment. The stunning visuals, paired with Leftfield’s track “Phat Planet”, created a dramatic and unforgettable atmosphere.

Ending with the legendary tagline, “Good things come to those who wait,” the advert perfectly captured the patience needed for both surfing and pouring the perfect pint of Guinness. A true masterpiece of advertising, it remains one of the most memorable and influential ads of the 90s.

“Hill Haven was the preferred accommodation destination for the visiting international surfers for the first Stubbies Event at Burleigh Heads in 1977.
In their prime with the beautiful Lighting Bolt board Hawaii’s Rory Russell, Rico DeSuza from Brazil in the middle with fellow Hawaiian Randy Rarick with his famous Bat board. The inaugural Event was so successful they restaged the original contestants 30 years later in 2007”.
