I had the absolute honour of witnessing and listening to some incredibly captivating textile stories in Crete(Greece) this summer. It was truly humbling to witness such tremendous craft.

Creativity meets curiosity in @no.phir ’s thought-provoking works 🌊🧵

For designer Ophir Barzilay (BDes 2026) transforming an unfinished kayak into a woven vessel was a way to create community and kinship.

Recognized with the 2026 Emily Carr University Alumni Association Award for Community Engagement, Ophir invited classmates, friends and community members to weave together, creating a work that reflects the many hands and conversations behind it.

Currents of Curiosity on display at Emily Carr University as part of The Show. The public exhibit covers the first two floors on the ECU campus and showcases incredible works across disciplines from graduating students.

Currents of Curiosity: a process centred around gestures of listening through conversations with people and material, uplifting and expanding community and self through acts of making.

This work has been a commitment to making in a good way; one that flows with care and responsibility, listening and holding stories in the fibres of each build.

So proud of this chapter of work as part of my grad project - currents of curiosity. These pieces are displayed in the show at Emily Carr and will be there until May 27th :)) by @no.phir

Collaborative weaving nights have been central to this work. Each week, we weave. Unfolding organically with room experimentation and play. These stools felt like another beginning. The start of a framework I set, with lots of thought and intention inspired by the Kayak of Curiosity. It has been a joy to reflect and see the conversations between material and people continue through new frames. Creating a pattern, practice, and framework in the early stages as an emerging designer.

Stool Series(in process). Part of my grad project: Currents of Curiosity.

These photos were taken throughout the process. Each stool is unique, most have been shaped by many hands and over many days. An iterative practice of listening and learning with materials and people.

Currents of Curiosity is a process based project centred around gestures of listening through conversations with people and materials.

I will be presenting my project this week on Tuesday April 21st at 1pm at Emily Carr University.
The event is public and there are lots of great projects to see(April 20-22) by @no.phir
