POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
If you’ve followed No Code for a while, you probably know our events, but you might not properly know the man behind them.

Meet Mark Thomson.

Mark is a rural schoolteacher, endurance coach, event organiser and the 2026 @ultramanoz Champion.

He’s also a true ’90s bogan who loves good music, good banter and doing distances most people wouldn’t even drive 😂

And I share this with some reluctance…he’s a Highlanders fan.
(Up the Chiefs! ❤️💛🖤)

He’s an introvert with absolutely no interest in becoming an influencer, so I’ve been warned that most of what he shares will be unemotional, straight to the point and very Mark.

But I get so many questions about how he trains, what he eats, why he does it, who he trains with and when he fits it all in. So I’m the girl gently forcing the boy to share a wee bit more of his journey!

Next up is the Spectacle this December...NZ's toughest Miler, and we’re taking you along for the ride.

Follow along. It should be bloody interesting.

From Sara 🙌

@no_code_events podium- Taupo 100km Ultra 🥉

5km into the race- rolled ankle... pretty bad too.
The crew didn't find this out until the 50k mark... at that point, the conversation became pretty simple... If we continued we risked doing meaningful long term damage-then we stop. But if we were going to continue, we needed to commit to that decision.
we weren't spending the next 50km debating whether to stop.
It wasn't allowing the injury to become permission to simply get around the course. If the decision was to race on, then we work with what’s in front of us and find the best performance still available.
Mark chose the latter... tough bastard.

He ran another 95km on that ankle and crossed the finish line 3rd overall.

X rays since confirmed no fracture. There’s certainly some damage there and plenty of recovery ahead, but a bloody well earned third place.

Proud of you, mate. A pretty powerful display of resilience when the day gave you every opportunity to choose otherwise. by @no_code_events

This one's for Mel. ❤️

100km. Third overall. And a hell of a lot more emotion than I ever anticipated.

Ultra running has this incredible ability to throw the script out the window. No matter how well you prepare, how meticulously you plan, or how confident you feel standing on that start line, there's absolutely no guarantee things will go your way.

And that's part of what I bloody love about it.

5km into yesterday's Taupō Ultramarathon, I gave my right ankle an almighty tweak. 95km remaining, and suddenly the race I'd pictured in my head looked very different.

What followed was a pretty brutal exercise in problem-solving. Adapting. Adjusting expectations. Finding ways to keep moving forward.

By the time I reached Sara at the 50km mark, I was in a pretty dark place. I genuinely questioned whether continuing was the right thing to do.

But Sara, not entirely aware of just how much damage I'd done, gave me the encouragement I needed to keep going.

And somewhere between there and seeing her again at 76km, something shifted.

The head came right. The doubts quietened down. And I knew that if I could just keep putting one foot in front of the other, there was still something pretty special waiting at the finish line.

100km done. Third overall.

But this one was never really about the result.

Earlier this week, my beautiful cousin Melanie lost her battle with ovarian cancer.

Mel was in my thoughts throughout every single kilometre yesterday. Through the pain, the frustration, the moments of doubt, and ultimately, the overwhelming emotion of crossing that finish line.

And while I'm bloody proud to have stood on that podium, the placing means so much less than the reason behind it.

Sometimes running is about chasing times, places and performances.

And sometimes it's about something far, far bigger.

This one's for you, Mel. Rest easy, beautiful girl. ❤️ by @no_code_events

A hybrid win-win 🐾🏃‍♂️

The crew get their adventures, I get my weekly movement — and the motivation to keep heading off grid into nature.

After recently completing a 100km trail race, I’m reminded that the little things we do each week add up.

Better mental health. Stronger base fitness. Happier dogs.

Fit walker. Happy crew. Everyone wins. 🐕🌿

It's never just about the running...

Not every great race photo involves a finish line, a podium, or someone digging deep into the hurt locker.

Sometimes it's a smile, a high-five, and a bunch of legends cruising past on a little yellow railway wagon.

And this is what we love about the magic @chilled_edge captures through his lens.

The moments between the moments.

The little interactions, the unexpected connections, the smiles that remind us that while we might come together to run, it's the people who make the experience.

370 participants. Thousands of little moments. And a whole lot of memories that have absolutely nothing to do with the stopwatch.

This is Trail Trilogy.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

Eight laps of Lake Taupō | 1,280km
A tick over 72 hours.

And, if I'm being fair, absolutely no fucking idea what we were doing.

I'd done one 24-hour ride the year before, saw that the 8-lap Extreme Enduro was an option at the Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge and thought...What the hell. Give it a crack.

Looking back now, the naivety was probably a blessing. This was my first real taste of racing where sleep became part of the equation. My crew and I were completely winging it. When to sleep. How long to sleep. What to eat. How to manage the body. How to manage the head.

We went to some proper dark places over those 72 hours.

But somehow, we kept turning the pedals. Lap after lap after lap. And eventually we rolled home in 2nd place. 🥈

I reckon this race changed something in me.
It was probably the first time I genuinely understood just how much more the body has to give when the mind is prepared to keep asking.

And it started an obsession that I'm still chasing today:

Find something that scares you a little.
Something you're not entirely sure you can do.
Then put your head down and find out.
It doesn't always have to be longer. Sometimes it's faster. Sometimes it's harder. Sometimes it's simply something completely outside your wheelhouse.

But I still bloody love that feeling of standing on a start line thinking...Shit. What have I got myself into?

Turns out this ridiculous green helmet cover might have been where a lot of it started. 🤘

STRONGER - FOR LONGER.

Coming out of UMOZ, @_mk.performance and I sat down and looked at where we could find the next gains.

One of the big ones? Durability.

Not just the ability to run fast.
The ability to run fast for longer.
To hold form when the legs are cooked.
To stay strong through the climbs, descents and undulations.
And then to wake up and do it all again.

Because that’s ultra running.

The gains aren’t made from one monster session. They’re built by being able to layer sessions on sessions on sessions.

So strength has become a deliberate part of my week. Lateral strength. Core strength. Single-leg stability. Building a body that can tolerate more load, for longer, without falling apart when the trail starts asking questions.

Nothing particularly sexy about walking uphill carrying dumbbells.

But there’s a reason it’s there.

Building the chassis. Then seeing how hard we can drive it. 🔨

A blast from the past.

The Pioneer. Still one of the coolest events I’ve ever had the privilege of racing.

Six days. Two-person teams. Mountain bikes. Central Otago.

Proper old-school stage racing.

The courses were hard. Really hard. The kind that tested legs, bikes, friendships and your ability to get up the next morning and do the whole bloody thing again.

But then you’d look up.

And holy shit.

Some of the most spectacular country you could ever hope to race through.

I’ve been lucky enough to line up at some incredible events around NZ over the years, but this one has always stuck with me.

Hard racing. Epic places. Good people. No bullshit.

Funny how, years later, a fair bit of that has probably found its way into what we try to create at No Code. by @no_code_events

Pretty cool seeing Laps at the Lakes through someone else's eyes.

One of the crew lining up this year also happened to be a reporter for the Coromandel Informer - and she's put together a cracking little piece about her day at the Lakes.

126 runners - 3000+ kilometres - a whole heap of boundaries pushed.

Thanks for coming along for the ride - and for telling the story.

Full article linked in our story.

This might be one of my favourite photos from the weekend.

I didn’t know Luke was taking it.

Both races had started. Everyone was out on course. And for the first time in what felt like weeks…there was nothing I needed to do.

So I sat down.

There’s a strange moment that comes with putting on an event. You spend months thinking, organising, worrying, emailing, planning, fixing shit and wondering whether it’s all actually going to come together.

Then the hooter goes.

And suddenly there are a bunch of people out there doing their thing.

Some chasing PBs.
Some chasing distances they weren’t sure were possible.
Some running further than they ever had before.
Some simply seeing what happens if they keep moving.

And you get to sit there for a minute and think…man, this is pretty cool.

That’s what I love about Laps at the Lakes.

There’s no magic number you have to reach. No distance that makes your day more worthy than somebody else’s.

You just turn up. Start moving. And find out what you’ve got.

By the end of Saturday we had people completing their first ever running event and somehow walking away as ultramarathoners. People smashing lifetime distance PBs. People absolutely cooked, ridiculously proud, and already talking about next year.

That’s the good shit.

All the work beforehand is worth it for that.

A beautiful place. A bunch of good humans. And an opportunity to find out that maybe your limits weren't quite where you thought they were.

Laps at the Lakes. Episode Two. Done. 🖤
