A small fleet of Saildrones are embarking on a new mission: circumnavigating Antarctica!

These uncrewed surface vehicles departed from Hobart, Tasmania, marking the start of an ambitious, five-year effort to collect data that will help scientists develop more confident estimates of carbon dioxide absorption in the ocean, while gaining insights to one of Earth’s most inhospitable environments.

First light - South Pole - 2026
observations from the field:

"The departure of the long night has been like saying goodbye to a friend.
We won't see them for a while, but they'll be back around soon enough.
While saying farewell to the stars and aurora has been sad, the month-long sunrise is a beautiful sight.
Spending the winter at the bottom of the world fulfilling NOAA's mission has been a privilege."

It’s October—the best month of the year! That’s right, October is our favorite because it’s Seafood Month, and we have lots to celebrate. Buying U.S. seafood is a healthy, sustainable, and delicious way to support our fishermen and ocean farmers.

The United States is a global leader in sustainability for both wild-caught and farmed seafood, because our fishermen and ocean farmers operate under some of the most robust and transparent environmental standards in the world. If you buy U.S. seafood, you can be confident it’s a smart, sustainable choice.

We’ll be sharing new seafood stories, tips, and recipes throughout October. So be sure to add more American seafood to your plates this month—and every month! Learn more at the link in bio.

It’s both #AquacultureWeek and #NOAAHeritageWeek—so let’s take a look back at some of the history behind our aquaculture work!

From pioneering oyster research to laboratories and hatcheries around the country, these blast-from-the-past snapshots offer a glimpse at some of the science and people that helped shape our aquaculture efforts over the years.

At NOAA Fisheries New England/Mid-Atlantic's Milford Laboratory in Connecticut, federal scientists have been collaborating with the oyster industry on research since as early as the 1920s. By the 1930s, the lab was established as a permanent research station—decades before NOAA was officially established by President Nixon in 1970.

Milford Lab scientists went on to develop techniques for spawning and rearing shellfish, including the “Milford Method,” which helped lay the groundwork for modern shellfish aquaculture and is still used around the world! The Milford Lab innovations continue today: at the Northeast Oyster Breeding Center, NOAA and USDA scientists are working together to breed high-performing oysters for farmers in the Northeast.

Milford is one chapter in a much larger NOAA aquaculture story—shaped by generations of scientists, industry partners, and communities working to understand and expand sustainable aquaculture practices.

Follow along with #NOAAHeritageWeek and #AquacultureWeek to learn more about our history and current aquaculture work. A rectangular graphic with grey textured background and a NOAA Fisheries swoosh and logo in the left corner. There is a two-line arching banner at the top titled “Aquaculture Week; Heritage Week”. Below the banner is a sketch-style image of a man in 1960s attire with a cap holding up two kinds of oyster farming equipment. In his left hand is a suspended net and in his right is a line with oysters secured to it. There is a speech bubble coming from the man that says “Two things to celebrate at once?! I’ve already got my hands full!” by @noaa
