“Whudduya think… 2 liters?”

Southern Arete on the Painted Wall! Wild adventure. Watching Luke crank the final roofs, with two thousand feet of air underneath him, was seriously inspiring. Thanks for the realization that I’m still a total weenie! by @noah.grage

Our final outing in Chaltén was spent doing some wild camping, and being a bit too optimistic about our last window of clear weather.
New Year’s Day looked decent enough to get up high, but it was sandwiched between two days of high winds. Either way, we set off from our hostel the afternoon of the 30th, to try and do some climbing on Cerro Chaltén. Slogging through the shadows, we arrived at an empty Paso Superior for our first bivy. We woke up early the next morning and caught the Brecha snowfield in cold conditions. We built up a pretty sweet bivy site/wind wall in the saddle, and got 9 hours of sleep on NYE!
Waking up the next morning, it was clear the wind wasn’t going anywhere, and with a poor forecast on the horizon, we figured we’d do some climbing on a very out-of-condition Franco-Argentina, and have a straightforward bail lined up. Although it was completely iced up, it was sunny and wind protected, and was nice to see some of the route/rappels. Leading in TC pros + ice tools was also a first for me !
On the top of the 4th pitch we started to get radio traffic from the national park, that a climber had been seriously injured on Poincenot, and requests were being made for assistance. We likely wouldn’t arrive in time to contribute much to the rescue, especially with many parties turning around on Poincenot due to wind, but it seemed like a good sign to head back down. After watching a helicopter land on the glacier from the base of the Franco, we slowed down our descent pace. We rappelled the Brecha in perfect cold conditions, snow holding everything in place, then walked back to Paso Superior under a rising full moon.
In hindsight, we probably could have found more “success” on a lower, east facing features, but Luke and I were itching to get up higher. Live and Learn.
I’m feeling fulfilled to spend time in these mountains, make safe decisions, and to meet so many amazing people.

Aguja De L’S con mis Perros !

“Only two weeks!?” has been a pretty common response from climbers asking about the duration of our trip in El Chaltén. The forecast obsessions, waiting game, and antsy atmosphere is a totally new experience. I’ve been reminding myself that climbing anything here is a gift. Plus, finally seeing Cerro Torre has already made it all worth it! by @noah.grage

On the way down to Southern Argentina, Luke, Caco, and I made a stop in Bariloche. We came to deliver a bit of gear from the US to new friends, Vianney and Belén.
They were amazing hosts, letting us crash at their place and showing us around their backyard. We spent a couple days in Frey, enjoying the luxuries of the bustling refugio. Spent our best weather day on “Siniestro Total” , a wild crack system on Torre Principal.
Can’t wait to come back, thanks for everything @belita.prados @vianneylhoumeau ! by @noah.grage

On Saturday, I got the chance to run the La Sal Traverse with my buddy Jack. A beautiful line that travels along the skyline of Moab’s backyard range.
Spending plenty of time in Southeast Utah over the last 5 years, these peaks have been the backdrop to many of the best days of my life. The range rises over 8,000 feet from downtown Moab, visible from all over the region. Seeing the La Sal’s covered in fresh snow, while surrounded by the red rock desert, is truly special.

I’ve refrained from venturing up there over the last few years, waiting on the stars to align for some kind of idealistic effort.
You never feel perfect, but the day to try finally came around. With the exception of football games in 6th grade recess, I felt like it was the first time in a long time that I’ve physically given something my all. Breakthroughs are hard to come by, but running these ridgelines with one of my best friends—while being flooded with warm memories of family and friends in the desert—pushed me into a rhythm I hadn’t felt before. Thanks for being up there with me, Jack.

Exactly 8 hours in, we were on the other side of the La Sals, which wound up being 12 minutes shy of the fastest known time.

Happy to be back down in Durango, and back on the San Juan choss!

Quick trip into the Needles, hiking in Friday night, and out Sunday morning. Saturday wound up being our only day up high.

Jack and I tried to pack it in, and linked up Pigeon, Turret, Peak 15, Monitor, Peak 13, and Animas Mtn. We went into the night a bit, after a lazy morning.
We got to watch Luke and Wes summit Pigeon at different times, each on their own solo quest.
It’s been a dream to visit this zone for years, and I’m already thinking about getting back!
Thanks for the great days, boys. by @noah.grage
