I found some words.
3 years ago today. 3 years more of life. I miss you and love you, Mom.
I was often sad when my mom dropped me off at school—not because I didn’t like it, but because I’d rather have hung out with her all day. My highlight of the day was when she picked me up (though I really did like school, don’t get me wrong). We did a lot together after school, and she was there to see me off to the next day and beyond.
My mom dropped me off for my first year of college. I remember that day so clearly. She passed away about two months later. My undergraduate experience has been incredible, and I’m sad it’s coming to an end. I’ve had fears about graduating—not because of work or “adulthood”, but because these four years have been so grounding in the face of grief. I remember this time three years ago. Even though it was so hard, I felt deeply connected to everyone around me. I’ve loved making friends, learning, and meeting new people, and I love that my mom got to see me start this new chapter. I know she’s not coming back, but I think that, just as my mom dropped me off at school, some part of me still expects her to pick me up when it’s done. I’m sad she won’t be there when I start my next chapter—not in the same way. The finality of death is something I still try to comprehend each year. Maybe we’re not supposed to. Maybe it’s just something we observe.
I often say the only thing I could want more of from my relationship with my mom is time—because everything else was perfect. I just want more time to laugh, listen to music, go on adventures, watch movies, talk, and see her without my eyes needing to be closed to do so. I’m grateful I got 18 years with her. More than that, I’m grateful I got to be her son.
I know she’s still with me, in new ways. That doesn’t mean I don’t miss how it used to be. That’s the grief and the love, trying to figure themselves out every day—and that’s okay.
In May, I’ll graduate, and I’ll always know how amazing my college experience was, how it set me up for my next chapter, and that my mom still got to drop me off at school one last time. by @noah.straus

My younger brother doesn’t have social media, so he won’t see this, but I still wanted to share this small note. Today (December 23rd, 2024) Asher turns 13. 13 years ago tonight, my brother was born and I remember the night perfectly. The crazy part to me is that it was 13 years ago. For those of you who don’t know Asher, he is pretty much as cool as it gets as far as people go. I’ve got to see this cool kid grow up into this teenager and I gotta say, I get more and more excited each day for the world to see him do his thing. Happy birthday, I love you pal. by @noah.straus

I know my social media has become mostly birthdays and memorials; thank you to those who've read my stuff over the past two years. This will be it for a minute.
Today is 2 years since my Mom passed. That feels crazy to me. I have a lot I feel but I’m gonna sum it up in this. I get scared about life getting locked in so to speak. The fact that a day may come when I cry about losing her for the last time. Or what I do on this day may be different at some point. I don’t want to continue to understand life without my mom. And when I miss her, even when it is so sad at times overwhelming, it makes me feel closer to her. Weirdly, leaning into it all makes me feel more present and reminds me of how much love there is. I’m scared of not feeling as close to her one day because of everything moving forward and there being less to lean into. The grief is the love, this I know, but I also have to remember so is the joy.

Before my mom died she told us what would be her saying “hi.” She said several things to watch out for. But most importantly she said the moments when we are dying of laughter, that’s her. And the moments we were together, full of joy, that would be her; stopping in to remind us that she’s here with us, always. Today, I spent the day with Asher and my Dad. We visited her, played her favorite music, and ate at her favorite restaurant. As the day ended, I listened to a song she showed me which I only have listened to on this day for the past couple years. This time, I didn’t cry when I listened to that song. I didn’t cry at all today. Today the sadness still felt fresh. In some ways the same, but also different from last year, and that scared me. But the fact is when I feel scared of not feeling as close to her because of life moving forward without her, I have to remember that anytime I feel joy for everything I do have in life, that’s her saying I love you. And what better way to feel closer to her than that?

This is my Nana. Her name’s Lois. Today, she turned 95 years old. 95. Pretty damn cool. I was lucky enough to meet my best friend on day one, and the good times haven’t stopped. This is a reminder to check in on your grandparents. Give them a call. Say hello to your elders, maybe take a moment to have a conversation. You may be surprised with the depth of wisdom they have to share. If we’re lucky enough to be born, we’re lucky enough to all have stories. Listen to them. I bet there’s a lot more to take from their words than you realize. And one day, if you’re lucky enough to be 95, you’ll share stories of your own. Thanks for all of your stories Nana.

I don’t see social media as an important medium for conveying things. But for as long as I chose to have it, it didn’t feel right that I wouldn’t share about my Mom. So this is my sharing. I love you Mom, I miss you by @noah.straus

Words don’t exist within the expression of love in its deepest form. I cannot use words to properly express how I feel. That’s how powerful love is. Not even an infinite amount of words in this language can meet it. And yet, I have so much I want to say. So I don’t know what to say. I will one day soon. It’s taken me 9 months to find some words, I will take my time finding more. For now, happy birthday Mom, I love you, and I miss you.❤️ by @noah.straus
