🐥 The Starters: Gen 3🐥

The starter journey continues into Ruby and Sapphire! This is where I think the designs really start to lock in, presenting three very distinct yet still adorable Pokemon-esque takes on lizards, chickens and axolotls. Of this trio, Mudkip is by far my favorite. The water starters really had no misses early on.

🌀 Madeleine Elster, "Vertigo"🌀

NWMFTFT #143

Review:
My very first Hitchcock movie - what a way to start.
Going in completely blind to Vertigo meant that the dreamlike, swirling storyline could fully take me by surprise. Starting in such a relatively-light fashion, I was unprepared for the steep descent into obsession and fracturing reality.
Here we have two leads at the top of their game, both essentially playing dual roles as the film progresses. The film feels very much like a stage play, relying entirely on the chemistry between Stewart and Novak, and the disintegrating relationship that transpires.
Gosh, it's tense. Stewart plays uncanny so well, but I was surprised to see how sympathetic the film was to someone like Madeleine. Both characters are preyed upon by outside manipulation that doesn't care about the destruction it leaves in its wake. Vertigo is a true, mind-bending tragedy. 10/10.

Design:
Madeleine felt like the correct choice of representative character, since she is the driving force of the narrative. She wears many outfits during the film, but I chose the gray dress. While not the most exciting, it is the most character-full choice, playing into Vertigo's ideas of sedate seduction.

👽👽 Ripley, "Aliens" 👽👽

NWMFTFT #42

Review:
This rocks! Should I continue? I mean, I guess.
It's always cool to see a series undergo a genre shift and totally stick the landing. Aliens does this with aplomb. While still in the same setting as Scott's oozy, dark, claustrophobic first installment, Aliens ratchets up the action in a way that feels completely earned.
Sigourney Weaver defines the female action lead here, taking Ripley in a different direction from the first that still feels warranted. The supporting cast, similarly trope-defining, are watchable the whole way through. Bishop is the best.
The aliens are, again, incredible villains, with everything there turned up to 11, all leading a thrilling final fight. I doubt I'm saying anything new here, but Aliens is so much fun. 9/10.

Design:
I am not a MOCist. Any time I have to a build such as this, I dread the work to come. The Power Loader *was* a necessity, though. Appreciate my pain. Vostroyan on Rebrickable provided some essential inspiration for getting started, mainly in the legs. It might be a little slap-dash here and there, but I am both proud of the final product and so done with this build. Thank you for witnessing my pain.

💣 Wile E. Coyote, "Coyote vs. ACME" 💣

NWMFTFT #141

Review:
Emerson (1841) once said, "It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude" (p. 5). Coyote is a model of self-reliance, but that same independent thought against the world's opinion galvanizes him to become a symbol of the proletariat against the bourgeois ACME Corporation. In a sense, Coyote becomes both the perfect symbol of American individualism, and the symbol of the working class run over by corporate interest and greed. Wile E. Coyote is the revolution.
The fact that this movie exists for public viewing is astonishing. The fact that it's this good is a miracle. Coyote vs. ACME is one of the funniest and most meaningful films I've seen this summer.
This movie's joke-a-minute writing really works to propel the plot forward, especially served by the sincerity of every performance. Will Forte and John Cena are both acting in an underdog-style courtroom drama, never betraying that they're representing toons. The largely-serious orchestral soundtrack locks in that illusion as well, making sure you are always on Wile E.'s side even as cartoon dynamite blows him through a wall. Each toon is well-utilized, telling a story that could only be told with this cast of characters, while also being useful stand-ins for countless groups of people passed over in the name of progress and a quick buck.
I loved it. Just a great, great time at the movies that I'm so grateful found it's way to the big screen. 9/10.

Design:
Lego's Wile E. Coyote from a few years back is largely perfect for my purposes, so I didn't end up changing much. The broken wall was an idea I had very early on and I'm very happy with how it turned out.

🐦 Jean Grey 🐦

From New X-Men (2001) - written by Grant Morrison, art by Frank Quitely

Review
Morrison's New X-Men! I have not read a ton of X-books up to this point, so Morrison was a bit of leap into the deep end for me. Boy howdy, is this a wild series.
Morrison's work in this book constantly plays with the ideas of progression and regression. Mutants are seen as a genuine subculture of the Marvel universe during this story, so people want to ape mutant style, mutant taste, and mutant ability, all while trying to stamp out the actual mutants themselves. It takes a post-colonial look at what counter-culture is in the early '00s, and once again questions the ideas of coexistence as a feasible concept. Does it all hold up? Eh, there are some rockier spots - I think Morrison's theming is hampered in the book's big twist reveal, but that doesn't affect the strength of the rest of the series.
Character-wise, New X-Men is pretty fantastic. We get strong turns from Jean, Scott, Emma, and the amazing Beak. The supporting cast is very entertaining, with particular mention going to the hive-mind of the Stepford Cuckoos and the militant Quentin Quire. Relationships are constantly at the forefront of this book, as messy and complex as they can be. This really is a soap opera at times.
Quitely's art took some getting used to - at times, the stylization can really sell the 'uncanny' X-Men, but at others it can be jarringly distracting and off-kilter. But hey, it certainly goes with the story.
New X-Men was a great read, and a very fun way to bring the X-Men into the new century. 8/10.

Design:
I chose Jean to represent this series as she is arguably the primary character of this saga, being emblematic of the themes of rebirth and evolution. I wasn't initially a fan of the X-puffer-jacket look, but through the series they really grew on me.

🧠 Team MODOK🧠

*****
Breakout from the Raft! While Zemo attacks the Avengers Mansion, MODOK grabs the top criminal scientists (and Walker) to subjugate the entire world! With him is the Queen of Werewolves, Deadly Nightshade; the psychotic psychologist, Dr. Faustus; the disorienting drug-administrator, Power Broker; and patriotic poser, Super Patriot. Does Cap have what it takes to save America once again?

*****
The final part of my Captain America villains series! By far the weirdest of the bunch here, themed largely around science (and Walker). Cap has a lot of genius villains in his catalog, who all do things slightly differently. It's fun.

With that, we come to a close! Half a year in the making, Captain America's greatest rogues. Have I introduced you to any fun new characters here? Who is your favorite?

🐊 Lena and the Humanoid, "Annihilation"🐊

NWMFTFT #140

Review:
In one word, Annihilation is disquieting. Based on the excellent novel by Jeff VanderMeer, Annihilation (the film) follows a team of researchers exploring "The Shimmer", a quarantined zone off of the Florida everglades, mutating everything in its path and expanding every day.
While I do not feel the film adaptation measures up to the novel it adapts, I understand and respect every decision made. The novel is vague and obscure and purposefully keeps the reader in the dark about almost everything going on - by nature of the action/horror film adaptation, some of that obscurity is done away with. It is replaced, however, by an incredible lead performance by Natalie Portman, a strong supporting cast and some gnarly flora-and-fauna designs that relentlessly hound our heroes. What is lost in mystique is gained in the mutated monster bear.
The film plays with ideas of loss, grief, and how much of our lives those things can steal if we let them. How easy is it to lay down and die when we no longer have anything to fight for? This material is well-balanced by the encroaching 'natural' world, seeking to bring each member of the team 'into' itself. It is a man vs. nature tale in a very refreshing fashion.
As an adaptation of the book, I definitely prefer the original. Taken on its own, Annihilation is a great sci-fi horror film that will absolutely be worth the skin-crawling sensations it leaves behind. 8/10.

Design:
In leiu of any *specific* spoilers, the Humanoid was a remarkably difficult character to translate. I am very happy with the texture and styling I was able to capture here. Natalie Portman is here as well - finally, one of my favorite actresses has made it on to NWMFTFT, always a cause for celebration.

🌪 The Stormlight Archive 🌪

Slide 1: Group Shot
Slide 2: Kaladin Stormblessed and Sylphrena
Slide 3: Shallan Davar
Slide 4: Adolin Kholin
Slide 5: Dalinar Kholin
Slide 6: Szeth-Son-Son-Vallano, Truthless of Shinovar

This has been at *least* a couple years coming. I drew Kaladin earlier this year, but I was not proud of that final product. I wanted to do more characters from this series but the lackluster start held me back. Two things changed - I started playing a Stormlight RPG that got me excited for the series again, and @jdm_bricks posted some lovely Red Rising characters that made me want to post characters from my own current favorite series! (I took inspiration from his post compositions here, especially in regards to Adolin.)

I love The Stormlight Archive and Sanderson's work as a whole. I have not completed the series yet - one book left - but I am thrilled to see how everything shakes out. Enjoy!

🤴King Blackagar Boltagon🤴

From Inhumans (1998) - written by Paul Jenkins, art by Jae Lee

Review:
I've been wanting to be better at reading comics. The joke - the truth - is that most comic book fans can't read. I want to fight that stereotype. A helpful guide to Marvel's Modern Age pointed me to Jenkins' 12-issue Inhumans run, and I gave it a look!
One thing to appreciate about this book is the complexity and tension of the Royal Family. Jenkins makes no pretense about this group being led by odd, genocratic isolationists, content to remain in the deep shadows, initiating more and more of their kind into 'useful' roles. It feels *icky* at times, all the while still treating the Family (especially Black Bolt) as protagonists.
The book does well at giving each member of the Family the spotlight - my favorite here might be Triton, whose issue was quite affecting, if cliche. What I don't think it does well is its tension. The city of Attilan is beseiged on all sides, and, frustratingly, Black Bolt does not move from his spot overlooking his kingdom for seven of the twelve issues. You are definitely placed in the mind of Gorgon and others, begging him to do something, *anything*. This is likely intentional, to build that desperation, but it came off more as manufactured tension over these issues.
The Alpha Primitives are certainly an uncomfortable blot on this story as well. A state built on genetic superiority is one thing, but utilizing what seem to be less-developed human beings as slave labor underneath the city is another. They echoed house elves in their servitude - not a great look.
To my great surprise, I did end up liking this murky book by the end, and it has given me an appreciation for the more unique aspects of Inhumans in the Marvel Universe. Would I read it again? Probably not. 6/10.

Design:
It's Black Bolt. Credit to both Gryff and @nicolegoyus for inspiring this new post layout!

🕷 Spider-Man, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" 🕷

Review:
No pretense: this is exactly what I wanted this movie to be.
Brand New Day is pure Spider-Man through and through. There is drama, there is tragedy, but ultimately a drive to use the power you hold to help others find a better way.
It is so fun to see how Tom has truly come into his own. In this film, his Peter expertly combines the responsibility, loneliness, humor, and exasperation that come with being the kind of hero he is. Each character he meets - Punisher, Hulk, Jean, MJ, Ned - is a reflection of where he is as a person. In chasing down this mysterious new threat, he is given the chance to leave each person better off than when they met. Saving the whole city can sometimes mean saving one person.
This movie is gorgeous, the best Spider-Man has looked in years. It's vibrant and frenetic but also quiet and moody when it needs to be. Spidey himself looks the best he *ever* has onscreen.
I don't know how much more to add. I was enthralled. I teared up four times. This is MY Spider-Man. 10/10.

Design:
You ever think about how one of the most popular fictional characters is actually really difficult to draw well? Drawing Spidey's webbing will never cease to drive me up a wall. Like a spider, heh heh heh. I'm so satisfied with the final product - this is one of those instances where he looks exactly like how I wanted him to. As a bonus on slide 2, I have him paired with Corensupes - I've decided they'd be best friends.
