World Mental Health Day, October 10

Sickle cell disease is often described by its pain crises and hospital stays. The part that gets talked about far less is the dread before the next crisis, the plans cancelled, and the mother who hasn't had a full night's sleep in years.

This year's theme is "Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change," and we think sickle cell warriors and their caregivers deserve to be heard on exactly this.

We wrote an article on mental health and sickle cell, with practical tips for both warriors and caregivers. Please read it and share it with someone who might need it. The link is in our bio.

Sickle cell can take a toll that doesn't always show up on the outside.

There is the pain people can see. Then there is the anxiety, frustration, exhaustion, and emotional weight that can be much harder to explain.

Imagine constantly having to explain why you cancelled plans. Why you need to rest. Why something that seems small to someone else has become a big deal for you.

Warriors deserve support for that part of the experience too.

If you're struggling emotionally, asking for help does not make you weak. Talking to someone, joining a support group, or seeking professional help can be part of taking care of yourself.

At NOB, being seen fully means seeing the person beyond the diagnosis.

About one in every four Nigerians carries the sickle cell trait, known as the AS genotype.

Most people who carry it never show symptoms and live full, healthy lives. The risk comes when two carriers have children together, since there is a chance the child could inherit sickle cell disease.
