I never met my father. Grew up with just my Grandmother and my Mom, as family for most of my life. My step father played an important but disjointed role in my upbringing while he was present.

I watched what it does to people when a man isn’t around. Made me decide early on the kind of man I wasn’t going to be subconsciously.

I’ve come a long way, but not in a straight line. I’ve made some terrible decisions out of the absence because it doesn’t just leave a gap, it leaves a hunger to be liked or validated for what I didn’t have growing up.

This isn’t about either of them though. It’s about something I learned coming out the other side of that: don’t let outcomes harden you. Not with strangers, not with people you love, not with the ones who left.

Staying kind after life gives you reasons not to is harder than people think. Anyone can close off. Takes more to stay open. And just because someone has a father doesn’t mean they really are one, so don’t confuse presence with what actually raised you.

Not asking you to lose your self respect. Just don’t let this world take your spirit. It’s too long a life to carry that weight the whole way. by @nobleknows

Year 33. 11 Lessons Life Has Taught Me:

1. Faith will rise and fall in your life.
But when you look back, you will realize how often you were carried.

2. Start early. Life rewards momentum far more than intention.

3. Good people are very rare. If you find one, do not treat them like they are replaceable.

4. Be kind. Even if you have every reason not to be. Character is revealed when cruelty could be easiest.

5. Constant sacrifice does not make people love you. It breeds resentment. Instead allow for reciprocity. They have to want to pour into you too.

6. Your body and mind determine the life you are capable of living. Neglect them and your future shrinks.

7. Your feelings matter. But they are not always the truth. To love is to try to understand as much as you seek to be understood.

8. Growth does not live in comfort. It lives where familiarity ends.

9. A man who can only influence others with money has very little power. Your reputation is the only thing that will last. Protect it.

10. On your worst days, practice gratitude anyway.
Find three things worth holding onto. It will not erase the pain you feel, but it will keep you connected in the meantime.

11. Be willing to apologize. If you hurt others do everything you can to make amends. At least try. Some guilt last longer than your pride is worth.

Bonus:

12. Value the time with the ones you love. You never know when or if you’ll see them again.
