Each of these three artists emerged as masters of style during the still developing graffiti style writing movement which was taking place on NYC subways in the 1970’s and early 80’s, individually creating some of the most iconic and celebrated works in graffiti history.
Now- 6 decades later, Chain, Noc, and Part are still regularly creating pieces in various forms and we are pleased to be presenting a selection of works on paper from each artists vast bodies of work.
We invite you to join us on Saturday, April 12 from
6-8 pm to celebrate the opening of this exhibition. by @noc167

We are happy, proud and hyped to announce the release of the ‘graffiti project of the century’ according to old school graffiti legend Skeme (New York City) on December 19. The publication Repainting Subway Art is the consummation of a tribute to the inventiveness and creativity of the original graffiti writers and photographers of the book Subway Art (Martha Cooper @marthacoopergram , Henry Chalfant @henrychalfant , (Thames & Hudson, New York, 1984) and the worldwide graffiti movement they inspired for more than 40 years. One gifted Dutch graffiti writer, Tripl, has recreated and reinterpreted Subway Art, paying both homage to, and starting a dialogue with, the creators of the original book and graffiti as a whole.

40 years after the publication of Subway Art the critical, humorous, and respectful release of Repainting Subway Art is a fact. To the deepest layer and smallest detail Repainting Subway Art unveils the dedication, focus and work Tripl put into the re-enactment; from painting, to photographing to styling. With 92 pages more than the original book, bringing new words and images, the new release gives an in-depth view on the project as a whole.

Text has been (re-)written by Dr. Edward Birzin, author of the dissertation Subway Art(fact) (2019), What Do One Million Tags Signify? (2017) and Nov York (2002).

Buro Stedelijk @burostedelijk will host the book launch with the presence of photographer Martha Cooper, walking graffiti encyclopedia and graffiti veteran Terror161 a.k.a. Wake up NYC, it’s time to hit the streets! Join us on August 17th for a special opportunity to meet legendary NYC Graffiti artist Melvin Samuels AKA NOC 167! An unparalleled writer in the heyday of graffiti with a style that was an aspiration to kids with cans all over the big apple. He is in both quintessential Graffiti documentaries Style Wars and Wild Style, his work has been featured by everyone from the MoMa to Beyond The Streets, and in recent years has shown work at Stephen Powers’ ESPOs Art World in Brooklyn.

Noc 167 will be right here at FPNYC from 4 to 7PM selling prints and original art, doing sketches and black book pieces, signing copies of Style Wars and for serious fans he will be taking commission orders for bigger pieces to be delivered at a future date.
