About the readings:

️⃣ Art as Experience (2005) by John Dewey reflects on the formal structure and characteristic effects of all the arts: architecture, sculpture, painting, music, and literature, positioning aesthetic experience as continuous with everyday life

️⃣ The Failure of the White Cube. From the 19th Century Moralist Art Museum to the 21st Century Civic Art Museum (2026) by Paco Barragán critiques the white cube model, highlighting its failure to address contemporary issues of gender, identity, race and inclusivity.

️⃣ Cultures of the Curatorial (2012) edited by Beatrice von Bismarck, Jörn Schafaff, and Thomas Weski traces the development in the notion of curating— from principally an activity of putting together—to widening its scope beyond showing or presenting to include enabling, making public, educating, analyzing, criticizing, theorizing, editing, and staging.

️⃣ Curating Live Arts. Critical Perspectives, Essays, and Conversations on Theory and Practice (2018) edited by Dena Davida et al. brings together writings offering practical and insightful investigations into the curation of theatre, dance, sound art, music, and other performance forms—not only in museums, but in community, site-specific, and time-based contexts.
