What Inspires You?

Fantasy Readers and Writers: what books, films, or characters inspire your work?
My Lightkeepers series was influenced by many of my nostalgic favorites, including The Dark Crystal, Hocus Pocus, Labyrinth, Spirited Away, Hilda (a kids show, but SO good!), Fruits Basket (Kyo cat!), and many more. There wasn't room to fit them all, but this set works well thematically. Share some of your influences!

Are You 'Hand-Holding' Your Readers?

One of the hardest but most rewarding exercises in writing is learning how to convey emotion without stating it. Which is more captivating: "I'd never been so angry" or "My jaw clenched as I struggled to hold back a string of curses." (And you definitely don't need both) This is a basic example, but you get the idea. Don't get me wrong—emotion words have their place in stories. But don't let them become a crutch. Make them work for YOU. Do you run the risk of a reader misinterpreting here or there? Sure. But it's usually more engaging to read without being spoon fed.

Removing "emotion" words from your stories (angry, sad, scared, happy) will prove if the story holds up or if you're "hand-holding" the reader.

New & Nostalgic...

Come on, Bookstagram. Lets raise up NEW authors writing outside the box, throwing it back to the classics, writing how THEY love instead of chasing trends. I love seeing old favorites like RoTE get more attention, but I KNOW I'm not the only one wishing for a Renaissance in NEW literature. And I know these books are out there. Have you read one?
