Before it held anything up, this was a pile on a drop cloth.
Strap leaves and sedum cut from a backyard in Toronto. The calla lilies bought. A kenzan from a shop in Kanazawa.

Nothing here gets trimmed off and discarded. The leaves that read as packing material around the flowers are the only thing in the final piece doing structural work.

There’s no vase in this one. The leaves are the vessel.

Made to be given away.

First arrangement of the trip — market dahlias, a borrowed balcony in Tbilisi, two months ago. Dahlias don't last once they're cut, so this one was only ever going to exist for that week.

Halfway through, without really planning to, I thought: I want to be doing this for real.

Sat back with a coffee once it was done. Asked the host if she wanted to keep it for the next guest.

She said yes.

Had a 3-week trip to Japan booked while I was still working a 9-5.

Quit while I was there, and just kept going — Poland, Georgia, spain, wherever felt right next.

Somewhere in there I stopped thinking in deliverables and started noticing what I actually wanted to make with my hands.

This is what came out of it. Early days, but real ones.

One branch, a few small yellow blooms, room to breathe.

A sketch by Apollon Kutateladze. Almost all of that gold paper left empty, everything happening in one thin band at the edge. I think that’s where the space in the vase came from. by @noema.house

The ones that stayed with me were the ones holding something you couldn’t quite see all at once.

The first one, especially. Its title was ‘Unable to Escape Thinking of a Woman.’
