Fighters use their fists. Artists use their hands: The raw energy of the cage and the gravity of political power - molded into art. We collaborated with @noesadrede to exclusively create an artwork for @contact_zine for this special occasion. 🖼️🥊🇺🇸

UFC 250 has finally arrived – an event dubbed „Freedom“ and held on the White House grounds. What is strikingly common about the language used by organizations, political parties, and even entire countries with totalitarian traits is the way they strip key terms of political and social discourse of their literal meaning, only to imbue them with the desired connotations. “War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.” – George Orwell wrote in his dystopian novel „1984“.

The pursuit of individual freedom has always been part of the magic of combat sports. In the ring, punches and kicks do not discriminate. Whoever dishes them out and takes them better will (usually) win. If you’re willing to invest and risk it all, you’ll get a more or less fair chance to improve your life circumstances.
Social advancement (achieved through the socially barrier-free act of beating the crap out of each other) is a piece of genuine, individual freedom, one could argue.
Yet, seven pairs of men – and exclusively men! – going at it on the fenced-in White House lawn for a US-President‘s birthday, only serves the cult of an elderly man, who loves to champion those „outmost masculine“ traits, he sees in MMA. A man, too, who – as one might surmise from his political record – likely has little regard for the rest of MMA’s core values, such as inclusion, fairness, equal opportunity: „Freedom“, so to speak.
