The Palisades inferno, which broke out Tuesday morning near Piedra Morada Drive and was brutally whipped by gusting winds, has burned through more than 15,800 acres as of Wednesday afternoon, snaking west into Malibu and east toward Brentwood and leaving widespread devastation in its wake.

Much of Pacific Coast Highway and its homes and landmarks between Will Rogers State Beach, just north of Santa Monica, and Carbon Beach in eastern Malibu lay in ruins. Large swaths of coastal homes perched along the highway were reduced to smoldering rubble, crumbling onto the beach and into the sea.

Southern California’s top fire officials met behind closed doors in East Los Angeles Friday to discuss the outlook for this year’s peak fire season and how to coordinate the region’s world-class firefighters to keep communities safe.

At a press conference afterward, officials stressed that even though coastal Southern California is not expected to have an exceptionally dangerous fire season, they are doing everything they can to protect Californians. They urged residents to do the same.

“It is clear that wildfires are no longer solely a fire-service problem. They are an all-of-us problem,” said Orange County Fire Authority Interim Chief T.J. McGovern, standing in front of a suite of emergency response vehicles at L.A. County Fire Department’s headquarters. “They can only be mitigated by all of us working together.”

Diehard Spencer Pratt supporters and a few local legends who didn’t make the list for Pratt’s watch party made the rounds doing media interviews and gathered at a Mexican bar next door.

Gregg Donovan, the former “ambassador of Beverly Hills,” sported his typical top hat and red coat and held up a “Spencer Pratt for Mayor” sign. Norm Langer, owner of the iconic Langer’s Deli across from MacArthur Park, talked to TV anchors.

“There’s a silent majority, believe me,“ said Donovan, who had escorted radio hosts Billy Bush and Adam Carolla into the watch party at Don Antonio’s on the Westside.

After the first returns came in, supporters on the street began cheering. A few minutes later, cheers erupted from Don Antonio’s.

Pratt did not talk to media lined up on the sidewalk immediately after the first results came in, which showed Pratt in second place behind Mayor Karen Bass.

hanging out in sequoia national forest (feat. hot spring # 3 in my statewide conquest)

the castle fire ripped through here at high intensity nearly six years ago. today, the forest is a lot of green shrubs on the ground with black sticks reaching up toward the sky. it’s cool to see so much work on the ground to make sure the next one is a gentle, good fire 🌳🔥 by @nohaggerty

Artemis II astronauts will splash down Friday using a new reentry technique, entering Earth’s atmosphere at 32 times the speed of sound.

NASA modified the reentry path after a heat shield cracked during the uncrewed Artemis I mission, prioritizing crew safety during the high-stakes return.

Southern California test pilots will chase the capsule through its fiery descent, collecting data on heat shield performance as it streaks through the sky.

NASA’s Artemis II astronauts, launching to the moon as soon as tomorrow, are protected by a rocket-powered abort system designed to activate in an emergency.

If disaster strikes, a powerful abort motor pulls the crew capsule to 500 mph in two seconds. The capsule then flips midair and deploys its parachutes.

To test the system, NASA tapped the Armstrong Flight Research Center, which has spent decades pushing the limits of human flight in Southern California’s Mojave Desert.
