I really don’t have the words yet to describe this feeling. This is a full circle moment. @essence has been my FAVORITE magazine since I was a little girl. I used to have stacks and stacks that spanned at least 15 years. Today, the fruit of my literal blood, sweat & tears are featured in the 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition; surrounded by artists that I admire and look up to. #GodIsGood by @noir.funk

Listen….yes, I still hate St. Louis
(and 👏🏾yall 👏🏾will 👏🏾be 👏🏾o👏🏾kay👏🏾! HEAR?!?!?)
But overall,
I’m starting to see it without some of the “noise”.

Things I’ve learned about myself so far in this experiment :
1. Seeing different variants of my mother, Carol, is WILD and it moves me to the deepest depths of my soul. Yes, it’s that deep.(I’m definitely writing a #KaylasKorner about the complexities of family. I’m gonna have to take my time with that one)
2. I love how die-hard STL is about STL. It’s truly St. Louis, USA.
3. I’m truly proud to be from #STL . Full stop.
4. I sound like a St. Louis girl and it FRIES me😂🤣 I laugh about this at least once a week. (I have no idea why I’m surprised by this, but I guess I never really paid attention to my voice.)

Maybe it’s not that I hate St. Louis.
BIG MAYBE.
I just hate how hard it is to find my version of it…

I grew up watching #ADifferentWorld, religiously.(Kayla Fact: When my father told me #Hillman didn’t exist, I cried for days😂 ! But I ended up at JSU. #Thee💙🤍🐅)
I saw myself in Kimberly Reese — brilliant, curious, and radiant with possibility.

There’s an episode, “Mammy Dearest,” where laughter is interrupted by truth.
“Your mama so black…”
“Your mama so fat…”
And Kim interrupts the noise: “It’s not funny!”
By the end of that episode, Kim stands before her community and recites “Ego Trippin’.”
Not as performance, but as reclamation; as a refusal to be reduced. It felt like a return to divine selfhood.

That moment planted something in me that never stopped growing.

I created this project for my birthday in October.
But fear is a patient thief, imposter syndrome is a convincing narrator, and perfectionism is a quiet cage.
So I waited, I doubted and I shrank-BIG TIME.

But now it’s Black History Month and I’ve been thinking about audacity: about survival as art; about the way we have always created-trembling hands and all.

Ego Trippin’ reminds me that Black women have always authored ourselves into existence.
From our mother’s, mother’s, mothers who named themselves before the world learned their language.
So, this is my remembering.
Not polished or fearless, but honest.

So, I release this imperfect offering into the light.
I execute it with shaking hands and steady spirit.
I do it afraid-and therefore, I do it free.

For years, my relationship with St. Louis has been… complicated.

Trauma lens. Small-town boredom. Feeling like I don’t belong…

But lately I’ve been asking a different question:
What if the city didn’t change… what if I did?

So I’m running a little self-experiment.

Proof of life and Kayla’s Korner Thoughts:
-Setting boundaries radicalized me
-I’m a habitual outfit repeater🤌🏾 My looks be hittin, IDCWABGTSAI💁🏾‍♀️
-I thoroughly enjoy wreaking havoc among the commonwealth (I refer to haters b.k.a., HAHs, as the commonwealth)
-There a people who really care about and believe in me🥹
-Invest in shape wear and a tailor
-Girl…Leave. Immediately.
-Read academic articles (if you’re a real G, read some scholarly articles too)
-Live and think outside of the box. Now more than ever.
-I perform my gender in a way that makes people forget that I’m just weird. And I’m still lit AF 🗣️But NEVER a weirdo. There’s a difference.
-It’s Libra Season. Stay mad.💋
