FLASHBACK | NOIR AT THE BAR EDINBURGH 2018 šŸ–¤

Back to 2018 and a brilliant evening at Noir at the Bar Edinburgh.

The fabulous Rebecca McKinney was one of the readers taking to the mic that night. Another face from those early bookish days who would go on to become a very important part of our story.

So many great writers, stories and memories came out of these evenings.

Three crime-loving women walk into a bar…

Jacky Gramosi Collins, Jackie McLean and Kelly Lacey at Noir at the Bar Edinburgh back in 2018.

Books were discussed. Laughs were had. Evidence remains.

Some friendships are definitely built on crime. šŸ–¤

Looking back at Bloody Scotland 2018, one of the things that stands out most isn’t just the incredible panels or the authors I got to see. It’s the people I met along the way.

Book festivals have this wonderful way of bringing people together. You sit beside someone at a panel, start chatting in a queue, bump into the same faces throughout the weekend and suddenly friendships begin.

So many of the people I met through Bloody Scotland are people I’m still lucky enough to call friends today. There are far too many of you to name, so I’ll be tagging instead! ā¤ļø

And, of course, there were some brilliant events.

The Swedish Crime Wave with Will Dean, Johana Gustawsson and Christoffer Carlsson, chaired by the fabulous Jacky Collins.

M. C. Beaton and Ashley Jensen talking all things Agatha Raisin at the Albert Halls.

And Pitch Perfect, which is always such a brilliant part of the festival and a reminder that you might just be watching the very beginning of someone’s publishing journey.

That’s what I love about Bloody Scotland. It’s not simply a weekend of crime fiction. It’s conversations, connections, friendships and memories that can last long after everyone has gone home.

Looking back at these clips eight years later makes me realise just how many people Bloody Scotland brought into my life. ā¤ļø

Bloody Scotland 2018

One of the moments that has really stayed with me from 2018 was the incredible torchlight procession.

There was something so special about walking through Stirling with the torches glowing, surrounded by authors, readers and fellow crime fiction lovers. The atmosphere was absolutely amazing and it felt like such a celebration of the community that Bloody Scotland brings together.

Looking back at these memories is reminding me just how many wonderful moments this festival has given me over the years.

And this one was pretty spectacular. šŸ”„šŸ“š

Bloody Scotland Memories | 2018

Next stop on my trip through my Bloody Scotland memories is 2018.

After falling in love with the festival the year before, of course I had to come back!

Another weekend in Stirling filled with brilliant authors, fantastic events, books, laughter and more memories being made.

One of the moments captured in this reel is Liam McIlvanney winning the 2018 McIlvanney Prize for The Quaker. What a special moment to have witnessed as part of the festival.

Looking back at these early years now, I can see just how quickly Bloody Scotland was becoming a permanent fixture in my bookish calendar.

And we were only just getting started… ā¤ļø

Bloody Scotland Reflections: 2017 ā¤ļø

My 2017 Bloody Scotland memories continue, and there were so many brilliant events that year.

One of my highlights was hearing Claire MacLeary at Crime in the Spotlight. I absolutely loved listening to her and it was such a memorable part of the festival for me.

Then there was my favourite panel, Four Broads in Search of a Serial Killer, with Helen Fields, Steph Broadribb, Susi Holliday and Colette McBeth.

What a panel! Four fabulous crime writers together, lots of laughs and one of those festival events that has stayed with me all these years later. I absolutely loved it.

Looking back through these photographs brings back so many happy memories. I went to Bloody Scotland on my own that year, with no idea just how much this festival and the people I would meet through it would eventually become part of my life.

And my Bloody Scotland story was only just beginning. ā¤ļø

Bloody Scotland 2026 is almost here!

In the lead-up, I’m taking a look back at some of the moments that have made this festival so special to me.

Starting with my very first visit, when I went completely on my own.

Little did I know that weekend would be the beginning of some amazing friendships that are still such an important part of my life today.

It’s funny how one decision to just go for it can lead to so much. ā¤ļø

Here’s to where it all began…

That manuscript you keep meaning to do something with?

We’d love to read it.

Submissions to Acorn & Ink Publishing close on 16th August, and we’re still looking for brilliant fiction to join our growing list.

We’re open to all fiction genres, whether you’ve written crime, romance, fantasy, contemporary fiction, historical fiction, YA, middle grade or something that refuses to fit neatly into a box.

We also welcome previously published titles and submissions directly from unrepresented authors.

At Acorn & Ink, we want to build relationships that go far beyond publication day. Our authors receive professional editing and cover design, ongoing marketing and promotional support through our connection with Love Books Tours, and a 40% royalty on net receipts.

Most importantly, we’re looking for stories we believe deserve to be heard.

If there’s a finished manuscript sitting on your laptop, tucked away in a folder or waiting for you to finally take that chance…

This might be its moment.

Submissions close 16th August.

Submit to Acorn & Ink Publishing link in bio!

Throw back to June 2017 with authors Doug Johnstone and Neil Broadfoot. šŸ–¤

Another wonderful memory from the Noir at the Bar Edinburgh archives!

From the very beginning, we’ve been proud to give established, indie and debut crime authors a platform to share their stories and connect with readers in a welcoming, supportive setting.

Here’s to celebrating every writer who’s stepped up to the Noir microphone over the years.

Throwback to 2017… šŸ–¤

One of the wonderful things about Noir at the Bar Edinburgh is seeing familiar faces return year after year.

This photo takes us back to 2017, when the brilliant Jackie Baldwin joined us to share her work.

From those early evenings of crime fiction, conversation and community, Noir at the Bar Edinburgh has continued to grow—but the heart of the event has always remained the same: bringing readers and writers together to celebrate great stories.

It’s been a privilege to welcome so many talented authors over the years, and looking back at moments like this reminds us just how special the journey has been.

Here’s to many more unforgettable evenings of crime, camaraderie and captivating reads.

Were you there in 2017? We’d love to hear your memories in the comments.
