red dot film series no.2

greta snider

saturday may 16 6-9pm

please rsvp for this event

link in bio & on website

for this series, instead of a programmer or curator selecting an artist's works, filmmakers are invited to develop a program embedded in their own relationship to their work. artists are encouraged to show lesser known or even unknown projects, especially ones foundational to their artistic growth. in addition to their own work, filmmakers are encouraged to select other artists' films (or media) which have impacted their creative development, or where a clear connection might not be apparent to those familiar with their work.
the title for the series is taken from a psychology test developed by gordon gallup jr. which determines if an animal possesses the ability to self-recognize. for the experiment, an animal is marked with paint or a sticker and then given access to a mirror. if it touches or examines the mark, the behavior is interpreted as a confirmation that the animal sees its reflection as an image of itself, rather than that of another.

rsvp only on a first come, first served basis

Excited to share info about an artist-led film program called the "Red Dot Film Series" screening at Winslow House Project in Vallejo this Sunday 3/8 from 6-9pm. The series focuses on current emerging and established San Francisco Bay Area filmmakers, each bringing a singular voice to the crucial history of avant-garde filmmaking situated in the Bay Area. The event is free and open to the public - donations welcome at the door to help cover artist/program fees.

First up is Zachary Epcar who will be showing related film works that have informed his practice alongside some of his early and more recent work. Please RSVP at link in bio if you are interested in attending, as there is VERY limited seating available.

For the series, instead of the programmer or curator selecting an artist’s work, filmmakers are invited to develop a program embedded in their own relationship to their practice. Artists are encouraged to show lesser known or even unknown projects, especially ones foundational to their artistic growth. In addition, filmmakers are encouraged to select other artists’ films (or media) which have impacted their creative development, or where a clear connection might not be apparent to those already familiar with their work.

The title for the series is taken from a psychology experiment developed by Gordon Gallup Jr. which determines if an animal possesses the ability to self-recognize. For the test, an animal is marked with paint or a sticker and then given access to a mirror. If it touches or examines the mark, the behavior is interpreted as a confirmation that the animal sees its reflection as an image of itself, rather than that of another.

Zachary Epcar (b. San Francisco) is a filmmaker whose work has screened at the international film festivals of Toronto, New York, Rotterdam, San Francisco, Vancouver, Edinburgh, and Melbourne; Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive, Media City, IndieLisboa, European Media Art Festival, EXiS, 25 FPS; and in solo screenings at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Museum of the Moving Image, and Black Hole Cinematheque.

Hope to see you there! by @noisefor

We’ve extended the sign-up window for our upcoming workshop! Join us on Saturday December 13th, 2025 for Tangible Media: Magnetic Tape & Creative Reuse with instructor John Davis.

For artists and consumers alike, the rapid shift from analog to digital media platforms over the past few decades presented both an economy of means and a seemingly unlimited range of possibilities. Though some artists, driven perhaps by nostalgia or curiosity, continue to work with obsolete media, inspired by the fundamentally unique materials and aesthetic properties inherent in them.

This workshop, led by musician/filmmaker John Davis, digs into the past to mine some veins of discarded media culture—more specifically, the creative use (and re-use) of magnetic audio tape technology. We’ll take a brief look into its history and look at some of the ways the technology has been used creatively and unconventionally. We’ll also demonstrate some accessible ways of using the media, while covering practical tips and strategies for sourcing playback and recording machines, new and used tapes, as well as some related tools and equipment. Participants will be encouraged to independently expand on the information provided, as the workshop serves as a jumping off point for those curious about working with magnetic tape for artistic exploration and experimentation.

Featured audio from John Cage’s Williams Mix (1952/1953)
