WALLFLOWER

A few years ago, I started this self portrait and completely forgot about it. At the time, I was really inspired by the drama of the Baroque period and how emotional, intense, and grand those paintings felt. The rich colors, movement, and ornate details always pulled me in.

I wanted this piece to blur the line between the figure and the background, letting my silhouette form through the shadowed outlines of leaves, almost like wallpaper. That idea is where WALLFLOWER came from. It feels like a bit of a paradox of myself. Being there, but also blending in. There’s a slight surreal quality to it.

I’m really glad I came back to this piece.

OILSPILL 💙💜👁️

Surrealism Self Portrait |

Out of everything I created at KSU, this portrait is the one that feels like me. Not the me you meet in passing—but the version that lives in my head. Twisted, still, too much and not enough all at once. Inspired by Lovecraftian horror, I wanted this piece to sit in that weird space between gore and beauty—something eerie but still hard to look away from.

The monochrome blues, with hints of pinks and purples, make it feel like murky, oily chemical water—unnatural, maybe toxic. The hair drifts like tangled strands reaching toward the edges of the piece, chaotic and wrong in the best way. The face is dissolving. And the eyes… watching, multiplying, becoming something else. That tension between stillness and distortion is the core of this piece.

I built it up in layers—sketch, ink, then tearing it open digitally—letting instinct shape it rather than trying to control it. I chased texture like it was something alive, let the light pool in strange places, let the piece breathe in its own unsettling rhythm. Now that I’ve graduated, I keep returning to it—not to polish, but to let it unravel even more. To deepen the unease. To let the eerie beauty rot and bloom. I want it to feel like a nightmare you almost want to stay in.

There’s something beautiful in what isn’t meant to be beautiful. That’s what I see here. That’s what I see in myself. by @nokatarinaa
