An Urn for Poppa, 2026

All my thanks to @nateskiffington for the tremendous help finding and cutting this beautiful, fallen beech tree in Ox-Bow’s Talmadge Woods, for letting me use his grandfather’s lathe, and the lessons on turning. by @nolanzunk

“To take a photograph is to participate in another person's mortality, vulnerability, mutability. Precisely by slicing out this moment and freezing it, all photographs testify to time's relentless melt.”
—Susan Sontag

One month ago, my grandfather was discharged from the hospital as a paraplegic. His prostate cancer metastasized to his spine, brittled his bones and eventually collapsed his spinal cord. Two weeks ago, as his condition worsened quickly, I rushed home to spend time with him and my family. These photos are a tender document of my time home that weekend: him bed ridden, his backyard overgrown, the light in his tired garage as ethereal as ever. I'm reminded of the above quote from Susan Sontag's On Photography.

My grandfather was a mythic figure. At 6'6", he hardly fit in the hospice bed installed in his living room. He was the subject of one of my first films, Hive Mind, an 8 minute documentary on his honeybee tenants (he referred to himself as a "bee landlord" rather than a beekeeper since "honeybees keep themselves.")

Last Sunday, at the age of 81, he passed peacefully in his sleep. My mother and grandmother were both by his side as he took his last breath.

I installed these photographs in my latest group show at Ox-Bow School of Art, where I am working as a videographer for the summer, on Friday, July 31. He passed while the show was on view.

I see these images, interspersed with long-exposure star trail images of Ox-Bow, as an ode to his legacy. by @nolanzunk

Immutable Potentialities, 2026

20 sheets of 8x10" Kodak Ektachrome and Fujifilm Provia Color Slide Film mounted on custom, 3D Printed Light Boxes with temperature adjustable LED panels.

Frustum shape of light boxes are directly inspired by the shape of the 8x10" large format camera the film was shot on and the specific lens that took the photos.
