Today I went into the mountains with a machete.

We drove for miles through mud, standing in the back of old off-road trucks, then climbed into the forest to clear the land around young trees.

Somewhere midway up the mountain, my lower back decided it had participated enough. One electric zap. Then another. And that was the end of my day in mountain forestry. 😅

I slowly made my way down and eventually caught a ride with another group.

Perhaps that was the most beautiful part of the day, absolutely unplanned 😅
Looking out the window - tiny villages, reforestation areas, crisp air.

We passed an impossibly old woman walking alone along the mountain road in traditional clothes. Tiny, upright, determined. She looked as though she had been walking that road for a hundred years.

A little farther down stood a bare-chested man at the edge of the road, a beaded chain crossing his body, looking silently toward the horizon. As we passed, he turned toward us.

His gaze was that of a warrior.

For a moment, the mountains felt like another dimension. Ancient people walking mountain roads, warriors watching the horizon, forests disappearing into clouds.

And somewhere in all of this, I understood something about belonging.

We had gone there to take care of land that belonged to none of us individually. Trees planted by other hands, on a mountain that will outlive us.

I was born very far from these mountains. Yet mountains have a way of making distance feel arbitrary. They rise from the same earth, connected beneath all the borders we draw on top of it.

What a magical dinner 🧚🏻‍♀️✨

Flowers. Gold. Sparkles.
Eventually, my hand became part of the menu 😊

Art does that to me.

Not all of it. Most pieces I can walk past, appreciate, understand (or not understand) and keep going. Every now and then though, something grabs me. Then another does. And another. I get pulled around the room.

They can be fun. Some may make me uncomfortable. Some may make me really really sad, even hurt inside.
Some I don’t even know what they’re doing to me, I just wake up half an hour later and the lights now feel so bright.

And then I zone out again.

I think it’s similar to the place my brain goes when I’m deep into research and there’s a question I desperately want the answer to.
Except research absorbs my mind.
Art somehow absorbs my whole body. Time stops behaving normally. Several hours can disappear.

I love that state of complete absorption, when curiosity has you so completely that, for a little while, you forget to keep track of yourself.

Maybe that’s one of the reasons museum Sundays feel so good to me. You can wander around until something catches you, and then just let yourself be caught. ☺️

It is impossible to measure what we owe to the women who fought for freedoms that eventually became ordinary.

The freedom to live independently. To have a career. To choose whether to marry, whether to have children, and what kind of life to build.

She spent a lifetime insisting that women should be free to define their own lives.

What a life. What a legacy.

Thank you, Gloria. ❤️

Sunday mornings in Chiang Mai 🤍

Long walks around CMU with Tahoe, podcasts, music, audiobooks and frequent interruptions for very good coffee, matcha and whatever delicious pastry I happen to find along the way.

Lately Tahoe has become so good off leash that these walks have gotten even better — he runs, explores, comes back, runs some more… and eventually I get a tired dog and a very peaceful café companion.

These came up in my memories this morning 💚

Still one of my favorite hikes in the Bay Area: Stinson Beach → Pantoll Campground → back down the Matt Davis Trail.

I miss this part of California. The strange forests, the fog, the Pacific appearing in the distance, and apparently an unreasonable number of pink flowers. 😄

It’s misty and rainy in Chiang Mai today too. Maybe that’s why these made me particularly happy to

Will be back there in December - can’t wait 💚

When we got home my sneakers were wet
I dumped mud and water on the bedroom floor
I didn’t know the difference
I was 5

My mother screamed at me for the mess
But he wasn’t mad
He said that billions of years ago

The oceans shifting and the plates moving
Brought that sand on that spot on the beach

And then “I” took it away

“Every day” he said “We change the world”

Every day we change the world

But to do it in a way that means anything..

that takes more time than most people have

It never happens all at once

Fifteen years gone and she still can make existence feel tender, doomed, intelligent, unbearably alive all within the space of a few minutes.

This performance remains one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard.

I keep having this experience in Chiang Mai.

I turn a corner, stop walking, and I think:

‘ of course ‘

Perhaps every one of us carries an internal visual language that we spend our lives trying to rediscover.

I only know that after thirty minutes of walking, my breathing slows, my thoughts become more spacious, and I come home feeling calm—but still gently unfinished, still wanting to think.

I wrote about this feeling today on Substack.

Link in bio.

Sometimes it’s rain over Doi Suthep.

A dog sleeping nearby but opening one eye every time you move.

Charcoal-grilled chicken you’re already looking forward to eating.

Debating which wine shop to order from because, after trying somewhere new, you still know exactly which one feels like “your place.”

And then looking across at a townhouse that’s nothing but dust, exposed concrete and possibility.

It’s funny how something can be completely unfinished and still feel like home.

Today I finally (almost 😅) secured my spots at Torres del Paine.

It sent me back to these old photos.

I don’t think I saw it then, how much my first solo trip shaped the way I travel.

I still love cities. I still love cafés.
But if there are mountains nearby, I’ll probably end up there too.

Patagonia, see you soon!
