launching this second collaborative project with NWABISA NTLOKWANA as part of @designweeksouthafrica feels like a full circle moment where we get to see the work & our research going further and taking a tangible form, interrogating our collective inheritance, the preservation of memory and our practices in a direct dialogue that aims to have a broader and a sharper language.

It also feels like the perfect introduction of our women's wear head designer @theophlsramohlale and collaborators as they had the responsibility to re-imagine with us.

Can't wait to share the moment and installation with our Johannesburg family and friends from the 8th till 11th October

Doors open this Thursday at 17h00pm

NOMBIDA (@nombidaofficial), founded by Thando Nombida (@thandonombida), and Johannesburg-based visual artist Nwabisa Ntlokwana (@nwabisantl0kwana) present a collaborative exhibition honouring Thando’s grandmother through the recreation of her 1980s patchwork leather dress.

The project brings together two practices rooted in material, memory, craft, sustainability and the ways women carry inheritance across generations.

For Nombida, the dress becomes a celebration of the matriarchal lineage that shaped his life; for Ntlokwana, it extends her ongoing exploration of motherhood, remembrance and renewal. Together, the artists transform an inherited garment into a contemporary vessel for memory and cultural continuity.

NOMBIDA®️ is thrilled to welcome Theophilous Ramohlale, a visionary multidisciplinary fashion designer whose work explores identity, heritage, and emotional storytelling, as our first-ever Head Designer and Creative Director of Womenswear.

A recent graduate of STADIO School of Fashion, his work merges technical craftsmanship with conceptual design, drawing from African history, symbolism, and traditional craftsmanship to create garments that honour the past while imagining new futures.

Unlike established fashion houses with decades of archived collections, defined house codes, and longstanding womenswear identities, NOMBIDA®️ is writing this chapter for the very first time without ever losing sight of our roots or the women whose presence, strength, and influence have shaped the brand into what it is today.

This role therefore extends far beyond the design of seasonal collections. It is a long-term responsibility to define the visual language, product philosophy, and cultural relevance of NOMBIDA®️ Womenswear. Working closely with the Founder and Creative Director, Theophilous will help translate the brand’s core values—identity, individuality, resistance, craftsmanship, and African design innovation into a complete womenswear universe.

Many thanks to @mbali_tshabalala for always allowing us to work on their studio, and to everyone who made this moment possible including our collaborators @kotastylebook team which got commissioned for this historic moment for brand.
