The Girl with the Shard. Colored pencils on 5.5 x 8.5 inch paper.

One single shard was all that remained of everything she had once possessed. It had never been a crystal palace, she was no Snow Queen. A sunroom rather, made of glass, unattached to any house, without foundation, and yet her place of warmth, radiance, joy, and laughter. Coziness. Love. Watching birds outside. Feeling safe.

All gone in a single day, shattered to pieces. The reason? Unimportant. Perhaps she had knocked on a wall to test its strength. Perhaps a storm had brought it down. Or perhaps unsupported structures simply cannot last. Others insisted it had happened to make room for fresh air, for living in the open, unsheltered, perhaps, but alive.

No matter.

Now she knelt in the darkness, focused on that single shard of hers. Drop the damned thing, many said. Both painful and precious, the shard had within it lived memories and unrealized dreams, songs unsung and stories untold, things that had been and a future that would never come to pass.

But that was not what she thought of now. She sat in loving silence, gazing softly at her cherished shard, believing, no, knowing, no, witnessing it turn into a star. She watched it begin to cast light all around itself, shimmering as it called new constellations into being, inviting them to sing new stories and build new dreams.

She was going to create a mosaic of redemption and repair. And that shard was only the first piece.

The Network. 9 x 12 inches, colored pencils on paper.

Pearl in her mouth, not a clue of who she was, or for what purposed she existed, she breathed and occupied space in that crooked home of hers she so loved. Bizarre and asymmetrical, alongside her fantastical plants and fantastical pets, unable to decide whether she was an octopus (she had the brains, she told herself) or a spider (she was weaving intricate thoughts and feelings faster than all arachnids), she lived and mused, she pondered, and she marveled. Little did she know that for all the beauty of those webs in her head, what mattered most were her pipeline limbs that were highway networks, arterial systems housing entire cities, nay, countries, nay, planets. Scratch that, galaxies. She was a macrocosm, holding space for each and all in her every nook and cranny, bursting at the seams with everyone’s joys and sorrows, fully oblivious she was teaming with life. (With special thanks to @two_burnt_breads who first saw the network and to whom the piece is dedicated.)

A piece I doodled absentmindedly in December 2025, to finally finish now. May we all be networks of communication making things possible, for ourselves and for everyone.

Daydreamer. 4x6 inches, watercolors and ink on paper.

If beauty lay in the eyes of the beholder, she was breathtaking. The world flowered into wonder when seen through her petal eyes. And her private thoughts? They always made her chuckle — a carnivalesque parade of whims and oddities, promenading, tumbling, and zigzagging through the topsy-turvy landscape of her mind.

So much daydreaming is a form of escapism, dissociation, a coping mechanism, the others said. Perhaps. Most likely. Definitely! She agreed wholeheartedly. Yes! Always yes. Yes to the disapproving teddy bear, yes to the wanderer in lantern pantaloons, bent and burdened by time, yes to the skinny neon penciled figure leaving marks everywhere—flames of fresh green, as youthful and springlike as she was.

***
Today I put the final touches on this piece I started around Christmas. It’s been a minute. It feels good to daydream on paper once more. To put words together. Publicly! It may take six months to finish a tiny little project, but how nice to be at it once more.

GalactFilles. Colored pencils and gel pens on 8x11 paper. Dedicated to my fabulously witty friend @two_burnt_breads who burns things out with a joyful nonchalance and zest for burning [life] to which I greatly aspire. 😄

Happy New Year to all! I mean, I hope it will be happy. I’m with the character in the foreground who thinks how come things are so peaceful and lovely in other galaxies? Well, one day. Meanwhile, the title is a nod to the likes of Madeleine L’Engle’s Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which.

Autumn Story. Watercolors, white gel pen on 8 x 8 inch paper.

“Let’s do it, then.” He was the phantom of a little cloud, fatigued from all that storming and thundering he had been tasked to do. She was the ghost of a butterfly, no longer in the mood of flying. Too cold. He wanted to float above the world — but how, without raining on others’ parade? “Put on your cape, here,” she said, “let me see what else they’ve left behind.” Remnants of Halloween costumes turned them both into a winged Snoopy-like witch — “you look darling,” she approved — and, “oh dear, how predictable,” a fairy. She giggled. She was the more talkative of the two of them, and he had sparked some life into her with his lightening. So they started on their journey, flying over somnolent garden beds from which the remains of flowers raised their frosted heads. They saw glistening crystals, they listened to the hum of bejeweled fractals, and they smiled at the soft lullaby with which the spirit of autumn was putting everyone to sleep.

Reluctant. Watercolors, pencils, and gel pen on 5x7 watercolor paper.

The geode shone brightly, its multifaceted sparks mirroring the peaks and valleys of Dewberry Nibelung’s bumpy hat. How lovely it was to have a visitor, welcome, welcome, please be my guest!

Should he? Step inside? That eager smile, seemingly kind and genuine! Could it be? The stories though! Tightly wrapped in his Halloween onesie, Mr. Tomcat felt cautious. Perhaps all would be just fine. He did have nine lives after all. Should he risk one? If things went well, he’d gain a friend, prove some myths wrong, feel the joy of love and companionship, learn a little about minerals (maybe). If things went bad, hm. Nine minus one makes eight. Right? Is subtraction commutative, though, like addition? It’s not nine minus eight… right? But neither is it nine plus one, is it? Can you ever gain without losing? Can you find out without trying? Where do those stairs lead to? So many calculations…. Live a little?

Life Force. Watercolors on 5x7 inch paper.

She had wandered around all morning, sometimes skipping, sometimes ambling, curious about the sounds made by the pebbles crunching under her feet, inhaling the fresh air of crisp autumn, happy to wear her favorite pompon hat and that new bolero coat — the only one she’d ever worn. Had she noticed that shadow that appeared on her face the day before? Well yes, but she hadn’t made much of it. Perhaps she hadn’t washed well enough after scribbling with a stick in the dirt, or maybe too much sun, it was still splendid outside. But now she was listening to the Spirit of Life cautioning her not to worry when things would happen later on, when living in the moment would no longer be all she knew, when sorrows and disappointments would bump into her, when many would let her down, when she’d fall sick with anguish and learn that there is No Cure for Being Human [Kate Bowler]. Not to worry, the spirit said, all she needed to do was to stay the course, shine light all around and sprinkle hope wherever she went, sometimes skipping, sometimes ambling, curious about the sounds made by the years under her feet, inhaling the fresh air of life, happy to wear her heart on her sleeve and that knowing smile that comes from making peace with things. And then, only then…

Dragonbutterfirefly. Entry for #mikiessummer25artthingy challenge hosted by @mikiesartthingy

Every night the marchioness went out and blew the horn of her cheeks into a whistle. A call. For what, for whom? She knew not. All sorts of things came in response, and she took them all in, bleary eyed from lack of sleep, intent observation, or maybe just the burdens of life. Some nights there were memories, many of them. Some made her tear up, some made her chuckle. Once, she had played the role of the dashing marquis, cape and all — had it been a dream or had it really happened? Ever present was the little she-elephant, piping nearby the sweet wistful notes of her own trunk; a sleepy rabbit, too tired to leap out of his hat and perform more tricks, having decided to sink into oblivion; a fish swimming among the random figments of everyone’s imagination.

On that summer night, just as she whistled through the stem of a zinnia, there came a dragonbutterfirefly. Her first. She looked at him in wonder, eager for him to be a sign, a symbol, a beacon of hope. He only wanted some nectar, to feed and to exist undisturbed. For a long while they stared at each other, unable to provide grand answers beyond the stillness of this chance encounter. Sacred time, misunderstood and meaningless, magic nevertheless.

Maybe Tomorrow? Gel pens, colored pencils, and a touch of watercolors in a tiny 3x5 inch notepad made by @stringofcatsstudio

The Marquioness of the Great Bouffant was exasperated. Seconds ago she had sat down with a cup of tea, ready to bite into a scrumptious biscotti, her favorite kind, the crumbly lemony one with slivered almonds and dried cranberries. She was anticipating the pleasure of sinking into sweet oblivion when Fishy Fish, that overactive overly fanciful imagination of hers, soured her mood by dragging her into the Land of Would Haves, Should Haves, Could Haves. Oh bother. There she was never alone, but always together with all of them, her past and future selves, alter egos, random characters she had dreamed up, she hadn’t the slightest idea of who they were, why they tagged along, and what it all meant, but here they were: the girl with green hair and ladybug eyes, always in demand in anime movies; the glamorous duchess with flowing ribbons in her eccentric medieval hat; the Regency-era princess, blissfully asleep no matter how many had tried to kiss and wake her up; the innocent babe who hadn’t a clue of what awaited her in this life; the girl with the pompon hat, all fluffed up with dreams and big ideas; and — she had to admit a particular liking for this one — the undeterred little witch who, lacking in broom but not in will, never stopped practicing her aerodynamic poses, purple hat on, fists closed and stiffened arms by her side, convinced that one of these days she’ll manage in her schemes to catapult herself out of this world. “I can’t figure any of us out,” the Marquioness pleaded with Fishy Fish who flicked her tail nearby, unperturbed, immensely patient. “Maybe tomorrow?” by @nomorewaitingforgodot

Leonna. (A Tall Tale of the Red Sky Series) Acrylics and gel pens on paper.

In a land far away where the sand was teal and precious, there once lived a transparent sylph who liked to play games of undoing. She’d take parts of herself and, from high up in that red sky of hers, she’d drop them to the ground, “just to see what happens,” she giggled, “like a parrot!” Later on, when all were asleep, she’d materialize somewhat, just enough to descend and retrieve herself, then back at it, “again!”

It was on one such night of puzzle making — the way she liked to call the reassembling of her more or less together bits — that he saw her. “Leonna!” he murmured, moonstruck, dumbfounded. “Leonna, Leonna!” Local folk had always talked of a mischievous she-imp who liked to throw shooting stars, spelling craters into the ground, and now he, the village’s nitwit, whom no one believed anyhow, to catch her in the act! They stood motionless, holding each other’s gaze from across the distance, he, bewitched, “Leonna, Leonna!”, she, surprised to learn she had a name, the crescent moon of her hair now all forgotten in the sand. Happy, bringing one another into existence, for one’s world is never the same following an encounter with a witness one’s true self.

Day Moon. A bookmark I painted a year ago, shortly after the one I made for @mikiesartthingy ‘s bookmark challenge (Apocrypha). I’ve recently completed the other side of it, a snippet of which I’m showing at the end of this reel — to be properly featured in a future post. The book in the background is a volume that’s dear to me, purchased last May while back in Bucharest. It’s an album about some locally famous 16th-century frescos and manuscripts from the Curtea de Argeș Monastery.

Mikie, a year later, but I’ll finally be sending these bookmarks your way! 😁🙌 #betterlatethennever

The Tale of Rosalba. Mixed media on paper. A little something in a little notebook.

“You hold my tail, I carry you, I look forward, you look back, together we’ve got it all covered,” Rosalba had told the bird, and ever since they had stayed together. She was a blue mare, full of life, but weak of legs, and rather heavy of behind. This had never stopped her from dreaming wild dreams, the most precious of all being that she’d always trot around with her tail up. An image of pride and dignity, she thought, and the vision made her burst at the seams with happiness. Rosalba could control her tail even less than her legs, “a bit of a problem,” she had to admit. Still. One must carry on, and hope for the best, she told herself.

The morning she met Bird (he didn’t know his name for he had eaten a worm as big as his brain and he had food coma) had started rather promising. Rosalba had just finished putting on her favorite striped tights and flower (“it’s always good to look your best while waiting for good luck”), when she stumbled upon a running turnip. “You tickle me!”the turnip giggled, while Rosalba gingerly nuzzled her. “I’m Euphrosyne,” she introduced herself, refusing to entertain the thought that she could end up as breakfast. She, too, was a turnip with a dream, rushing to get to rehearsal in the town’s new ballet, in which she was to be one of the three graces. Rosalba wasn’t hungry, but rather mightily intrigued by this tutu thing. “If I snorted into it hard enough, the currents of air could lift my tail up!” she thought to herself just as Bird landed on her back. Plopped by the wind, of course, for Bird could neither fly nor walk, having not been blessed by life with anything other than a long beak. “I’ll hold your tail up, you carry me” he told Rosalba, and thus started their symbiotic friendship. “It was meant to be,” they’d tell passersby, “see how well our beak and tights go together?”
