A small note on “the two worst things a person can be”: this is, of course, deliberate hyperbole, not an attempt to rank marginalisation or erase the experiences of disabled, queer, trans, poor or otherwise marginalised people. I’m speaking specifically from where I stand, and about the particular social burden of being both Black and female.

Because perhaps part of becoming ungovernable is resisting the urge to make yourself perfectly palatable before you’ve even finished speaking.

Definitions belong to the definers, not the defined. And lately, I’ve been much more interested in defining myself.

I recently turned thirty-one.

Here are the main things.

1. Have your own monneeeyyyy, if you can. Having money will, in fact, help with regulating your nervous system.

2. Make life was whimsical as you can. Doesn't have to be aesthetic. Even if you have to count all your cents so you can take a walk to the corner store for a packet of go-slo's at sunset.

3. Your female friends have so much more to teach you than you think. There is so much love there.

4. It's okay to mourn your youth.

5. Aging isn't even one percent as scary as whatever is going on with people who are trying not to.

6. Sometimes life is ghettooooo. Sometimes it's not. It's not personal. The universe is amoral.

7. As Lauryn Hill said, you can be unselfish without being blind.

8. Unfortunately you do have to eat healthy food. Unfortunately, it is, in fact, very expensive. by @nonidutoit_
