In Buddhist mandalas, millions grains of sand are meticulously arranged and charged with spiritual blessings, only to be ritually dismantled and returned to nature, restaging the impermanence of life. This cyclical understanding of time recalls Nietzsche’s eternal return and Vasari’s understanding of art as cycles of origin, flourishing, and decay.

To see the world in a grain of sand extends this philosophical lineage through works that live between the transient and the eternal, the toxic and the sublime, bringing together ancient cosmologies and futuristic visions.

New exhibition alert! We’re thrilled to present ⏳ To see the world in a grain of sand ⏳on view in our gallery from August 7 – September 29!

🎉Join us for the opening reception of “To see the world in a grain of sand” on Friday August 22nd from 7–9PM!

Featuring works by Noni Kaur, Ryan Kelln, and Chris Myhr, and curated by Gladys Lou, “To see the world in a grain of sand” is a multisensory exhibition that explores sand as a medium of communication, bridging the physical and digital, the natural and artificial, the past and future.

How does the growing demand for sand in technology shape contemporary discourse on resource extraction, environmental degradation, and global inequality? And how might sand, like the hourglass, capture and reverse the fleeting nature of time?

Drawing inspiration from William Blake’s poem, “Auguries of Innocence” (1863), the exhibition reflects on how the smallest particles of matter encode vast cultural, ecological, and geopolitical significance.
