Behind the scenes: X-RAY & Noelle Mason

In her series “Backscatter Blueprint֧“, American artist Noelle Mason (@nonomason) works with results from X-ray backscatter technology used in border surveillance. She immortalizes the original digital images on paper in the form of cyanotypes (a printing technique that works with light). This reveals the dangers that people fleeing their homes must face in the hope of a better future.

“‘X-Ray Vision vs. Invisibility’ is a body of work about the phenomenological effects of vision technologies on the perception of undocumented immigrants. The images used in this series were collected from the United States Border Patrol and border-watching vigilante websites. This project remediates images made by machine vision technologies that are used to patrol international borders into craft processes.“ - Noelle Mason (@nonomason) by @tempus_projects

Elephant Ivory Traveling Buddha, X-Ray, Light Box, Bill of Sale, Plane Ticket

36" x 18"

2007

In 2007 I was invited to a residency in Hong Kong. While there I made the work Mule (HKG/ORD). This work explores my own relationship to tourism and travel, borders and legality. I purchased an elephant ivory Buddha (illegal to bring into theUS) and smuggled it vaginally from HKG to ORD, this invisible performance was documented through x-ray image bill of sale and plane ticket. by @tempus_projects
