What is the industry, when industrialization runs through data streams and convoluted decision-making processes? Where to look when there is apparently nothing to look at? When machines and sensors do the job of seeing and understanding instead of you? How can you orient yourself when you only get blurred shadows of what industrialisation is really setting in motion? How do you reclaim agency and redefine justice?

The realisation of the 5th Industrial Art Biennial – The Vast Automaton demanded endurance and mutual trust. Its complexity brought moments of uncertainty and ongoing negotiation. Nonetheless, within these conditions, a shared space of inquiry gradually emerged.

Working with the artists involved has reshaped the way we think about curating and responsibility within unstable systems. The biennial unfolded as a collective exercise in attention, where imagination operates alongside accountability.

Thank you for believing in The Vast Automaton, for staying with its uncertainties, and for transforming a fragile terrain into a space of shared commitment and possibility.

Within the context of the 5th Industrial Art Biennial – The Vast Automaton, the artists became comrades in risk and imagination.

We want to thank all those who trusted this project and committed to it with generosity, patience, and intellectual courage.

Their works expanded the curatorial rationale through divergence and unexpected alignments, tracing blind spots, evoking spectres, and activating dormant stories.

Through their practices, the industrial emerged as a haunted and contested landscape, deeply entangled with memory, embodiment, and everyday life.

The 5th Industrial Art Biennial – The Vast Automaton took shape within an unstable terrain. An industrial condition that unfolds through data streams, automated decisions, logistical abstractions, and invisible infrastructures shaping bodies, landscapes, and imaginaries.

Industrialisation today operates at multiple scales, intersecting human and non-human lives from the molecular to the planetary. Its processes remain dispersed, and often sensed through their consequences rather than their forms. Orientation becomes fragile while agency is constantly tested.

In the Istrian landscape, the specters of old infrastructures linger, echoing the instances of individuals that inhabited and even questioned them. But specters also come from the present as unheard voices, and from the future, disguised as promises and dreams.

This biennial emerged from the need to enter this terrain without simplification. It approached the industrial as an epistemological condition, informed by extraction, computation, and infrastructural logics. A landscape where visibility and invisibility remain deeply entangled.

On Saturday 13th September the second introductory event of the 5th Industrial Art Biennial took place in the remarkable surroundings of the Small Roman Theatre and the Archaeological Museum of Istria in Pula. It featured two Postgravity Art “informances” by Dragan Živadinov and Dunja Zupančič.

Concept

The Vast Automaton delves into the emergence of mega-structural landscapes, spanning energy infrastructure, mining regions, industrial automation and their far-reaching impact on both human and non-human life. Addressing the ongoing polycrisis rooted in 20th-century industrialisation, The Vast Automaton opens space for alternative visions of the present. This edition investigates automation, extractivism, and critical technologies aiming to unveil unseen facets of contemporary industrialisation.
The programme unfolds across four spatial clusters — Labin, Raša, Pula, and Vodnjan — and consists of site-specific works, installations, video, and film projections that question shifting power relations and offer new perspectives on our entanglement with technological systems, emerging subjectivities, and the planet itself.

Koncept

Ogroman automat istražuje nastanak megastrukturalnih krajolika koji obuhvaćaju energetsku infrastrukturu, rudarstvo, industrijsku automatizaciju te njihov dubok utjecaj na ljudski i neljudski život. Polazeći od današnje polikrize, čiji su korijeni u industrijalizaciji 20. stoljeća, Ogroman automat otvara prostor za alternativne vizije sadašnjosti. Ovo izdanje bijenala bavi se temama automatizacije, ekstraktivizma i kritičkih tehnologija, s ciljem otkrivanja nevidljivih aspekata suvremene industrijalizacije.
Program se odvija kroz četiri prostorna klastera — Labin, Raša, Pula i Vodnjan — i sastoji se od prostorno specifičnih radova, instalacija, video i filmskih projekcija koje propituju promjenjive odnose moći te nude nove poglede na našu isprepletenost s tehnološkim sustavima, novim subjektivnostima i samim planetom.

Bani Brusadin

Bani Brusadin is a curator, educator, and researcher whose work explores critical technologies, planetary infrastructures, and the politics of digital cultures. He is currently Lead Curator at Medialab Matadero Madrid (@medialabmatadero), and was part of the curatorial team for transmediale 2023. He co-founded The Influencers festival, a long-running platform for radical artistic practices and cultural interference. His curatorial approach emphasises the role of art in interrogating automation, post-industrial landscapes, and socio-technological change. Rooted in network cultures and speculative scenarios, his projects examine how artists respond to systemic transformations shaping contemporary life and the futures at stake.

Bani Brusadin je nezavisni kustos, edukator i istraživač, koji se u svojoj karijeri bavio brojnim projektima na području suvremene umjetnosti, kritičkih tehnologija, planetarne infrastrukture i utopije umreženog društva.
Trenutno je glavni kustos Medialaba, projekt u sklopu centra suvremene umjetnosti Matadero u Madridu (@medialabmatadero) . Godine 2023. bio je član kustoskog tima renomiranog festivala transmediale, jednog od najstarijih europskih festivala digitalne umjetnosti, a bio je i sukreator i kustos festivala The Influencers u Barceloni, koji se od 2004. godine bavi nekonvencionalnim umjetničkim praksama radikalnim i projektima.
Brusadinovo istraživanje temelji se na kritičkom pristupu digitalnoj kulturi i tehnologijama, a njegova kustoska praksa naglašava važnost umjetničkih projekata koji preispituju društvene i političke aspekte tehnoloških promjena. Njegov rad često istražuje načine na koje umjetnost može odgovoriti na izazove suvremenog društva, a tematski fokus na automatizaciju, tehnologiju i postindustrijske procese u potpunosti se poklapa s temama koje će biti u središtu 5. izdanja Bijenala.
