たまには個展でもやればいいのに、と勧められるが仕事量の多さを想像して尻込みをしてしまう。どうしたものか。無理にやって、燃え尽きてしまったり、なにかしらに絶望したりしないか心配。

#abstractphotography #tv_hiddenbeauty #accidentalart #urbantexture #weatheredpaint A heavily weathered painted surface with layers of reddish brown, pale blue, white and muted green. Repeated wear and peeling have exposed older layers underneath, leaving vertical streaks and irregular fragments of color across the surface. taken in 高円寺 by @nonturn

比較的古く野蛮な印象のポール。弱いけどオシャレか、強くてノイジーか、前者の方が理解者が多いのは確かだけどね。どう認識してもらいたいかというエゴイスティックな問題。くだらない問題だね。

Eight performers pose on a length of white fabric, all in white clothing covered in handwritten Japanese text: a person in a curly blonde wig and an apron, a person leaning forward from a wheelchair, dancers stretching and lying on the floor, and a performer in a pink wig and a frilled dress. アーティストは人の話を聞かない。僕はどう思われるかばかりを考えているので、あまり適性はないんだけど、ミニマリズムや抽象表現ってのは、何を考えているか分かりにくいから、やりやすいよ。

写真は杉並区永福一丁目。

#findingbeautyoutofshit #abstractphotography #tv_hiddenbeauty #accidentalart #hintology Eifuku 1-chome, Suginami, Tokyo. This appears to be a weathered concrete wall covered with remnants of old paint. Large pale rectangular areas overlap with faded orange and green layers, while the rough concrete texture breaks through across the entire surface. Dirt, abrasion, small cracks and granular deposits have gradually blurred the original painted shapes, leaving only fragments of their former geometry. taken in 永福 by @nonturn

I’ve released Repeating Town, a new album made entirely from sounds recorded in the city, continuing the approach of Territory.

I started making demos for this album eight years ago, just after Territory was released. At the same time, I was becoming frustrated by how difficult and inefficient this anti-instrumental approach was. I knew I could make more sophisticated music much more easily with instruments. It’s impossible to deny the beauty of instrumental sounds developed through centuries of accumulated knowledge.

Still, some people valued the ambition behind this unreasonable and slightly anarchic approach. Today, I even have opportunities on national television to demonstrate my way of turning everyday sounds into music. I realised I don’t need to convince everyone.

So I decided to finish the project of turning the area around Koenji into music, and completed seven tracks.

This series is not only about turning city sounds into music. Every track is made at 96 BPM, so DJs can connect the pieces into one continuous set. By mixing Territory and this album, there is now enough material for an hour-long set.

I also know this music isn’t something society particularly needs. Music usually works through shared instruments, sounds, forms and languages. We communicate through things we recognise, then change them. Nobody can communicate with a completely isolated language.

But I don’t think music has to exist only as an extension of instruments and the music industry developed largely in the West since the Industrial Revolution. Machines, footsteps, traffic and other everyday sounds can also become the basis for my own sounds and musical system.

However inefficient it is, I want to keep doing this kind of reactionary work. Developing my own music matters more to me than becoming better at making music that already exists.

From here, I may return to writing with instruments as a composer. Working without them has made me frustrated by how much of my musical language I cannot express. I feel the need to step back onto the conventional musical field and test myself there again.

To everyone who came to the listening party, I fell asleep. Sorry. I feel terrible about it. Seriously...

#findingbeautyoutofshit #abstractphotography #tv_hiddenbeauty #accidentalart #hintology A close-up photograph of a heavily weathered painted surface. Layers of orange, white, green, and black paint have cracked, peeled, and worn away at different rates. A dense band of dark green and black abrasion runs through the center, bordered by a relatively uniform orange area on one side and a network of fine cracked paint on the other. Repeated scraping, corrosion, and accumulated layers of paint have produced several distinct textures across a single surface. by @nonturn

鉄板。

#findingbeautyoutofshit #abstractphotography #tv_hiddenbeauty #accidentalart #hintology A close-up of a weathered steel plate covered with layers of rust, oxidation, stains, scratches, and scattered pale spots. The corrosion spreads in soft, irregular fields of gray, brown, pink, and ochre, making the metal surface resemble a satellite image of an unfamiliar landscape or a distant nebula seen through space. by @nonturn
