Then, she learned about the launch of NP's Women-Friendly Space, a place where women and girls can seek #safety from violence and abuse.

Through this initiative, Sweetsel helps women better understand their rights to health services and protection, by connecting them with information and support they may not have otherwise known was available. She remains committed to empowering other women in her community.

🔸Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the emancipation of folks previously enslaved in the U.S.

The first celebration took place in 1866 in Galveston, Texas, and marked the beginning of what has become a nationwide tradition.

Today, we celebrate the end of slavery in the United States and honor the resilience and strength of Black Americans.

🌅Morning: NP organised a session at the Dutch Embassy!

Civilians, like Alawiya, tuned in from conflict-affected regions to share their lived experiences and calls to action!

And humanitarian organization leaders speak on behalf of their country programmes.

🕛Afternoon: A discussion convened by Canada and Australia in the UN building!

Panelists speak about actions needed to strengthen the protection of humanitarian personnel.

🎨 Evening: The Arts Meet #CivilianProtection

Artists shared beautiful and reflective works exploring linkages between art, #peace and #safety.

So many moments of genuine connection, reflection, and solidarity!

🌐 At Protection of Civilians Week 2026, our Executive Director, Tiffany Easthom moderated a conversation at the UN on “Protecting the Protectors — Centering the Protection of Humanitarian Personnel through the Reset.”

The session, co-hosted by Permanent Mission of Australia and Permanent Mission of Canada, brought together a panel to confront a troubling gap: humanitarian workers are being killed at alarming rates, often by the very member states that have signed commitments to protect them. So what does it actually take to move from proclamation to practice?

Panelists Abby Stoddard of Humanitarian Outcomes, Hichem Khadhraoui of Center for Civilians in Conflict, Aurélien Buffler of United Nations OCHA, and Nick Leddy of Legal Action Worldwide (LAW), walked us through data on humanitarian safety, as well as reflections on operationalizing member state commitments, systemic reform, and accountability.

Our own Joachim "Yomi" Kleinmann, Head of Ukraine Programming, drawing on field perspective, brought the room what protecting local #humanitarian workers worldwide demands, in terms of political commitment, the need to listen and have difficult policy conversation globally on revising current legal frameworks that account for too many violations.

🔸 Since fleeing violence in #Darfur, a number of women have been able to reestablish their Women's Protection Team (WPT) in #Tawila.

With the support of NP, they're leading hygiene awareness sessions and organizing protective presence at crowded water points, where tensions can quickly escalate.

These WPT leaders have made the essential daily task of fetching water a much safer process, especially for women and girls.

🦽 Odesa is home to one of #Ukraine’s largest veteran populations, including over 7,300 veterans who have disabilities as a result of injuries sustained during their military service.

One of NP's local partners, @vilnivoiny (“Free Warriors”), is using adaptive sports, like wheelchair basketball, to help war #veterans improve physical health, overcome social isolation, build confidence, and regain community.

These crucial services under the Aid4Heroes Project, are increasing access and strengthening #SocialCohesion across communities.

#KingdomNL hosted the side-event “Centring Civilian Agency and Community-Led Protection in an Era of Constraints, Austerity and Impunity” together with @nonviolentpeaceforce @civcenter and @paxvoorvrede (Pax for Peace) as part of the Protection of Civilians week at the UN.

#KingdomNL Permanent Representative @lise_gvh delivered the opening remarks.

As circumstances worsen, communities themselves continue to monitor threats, reduce harm and keep each other safe - often with very little external support.

This third edition of our PoC Week side event moved the conversation from the ‘why’ to the ‘how’ of community-led protection, with direct testimonies from civilians and local partners in Sudan, South Sudan and Yemen.

The discussion focused on:

🔷 centering the voices of those most affected by conflict and sustaining community-led protection amid shrinking resources

🔷 recognizing and resourcing local civil society as core partners

🔷 institutionalizing unarmed, civilian-led approaches in policy and practice

An evening bringing together poetry, short film, music, and painting in a walking exhibition format — centering the voices of artists living in, or displaced by, conflict to explore civilian protection and respect for international human law through image, sound, narrative, and presence.

🏛️ Quick shout out to the congressional champions that introduced the 'Protecting Human Rights & Public Health in Foreign Assistance Act' to block the expanded #GlobalGagRules.

This policy directly attacks efforts to advance sexual and reproductive health, diversity, equity, and inclusion, gender equality, and the #HumanRights of #LGBTQI+ people.

❌ It extends to all non-military foreign assistance, including #HumanitarianAid, and to new entities, including U.S.-based organizations, UN partners, and even other governments.

This expansion is an unprecedented and dangerous shift that the Trump administration is using to weaponize #ForeignAid... at the expense of global progress that benefits everyone.

⚖️ The new legislation proposed would block the Global Gag Rules, making U.S. foreign assistance more effective and ensure it reflects people’s needs.
