Breaking My Own Rules 🌊📱

I used to have a strict no-devices-underwater rule. The ocean was for presence, not pixels.

Then work happened. Necessity crept in. And somewhere along the way… I realised I actually loved it.

What started as a very DIY solution slowly turned into a craft I genuinely enjoy refining.

Less about breaking rules now, more about respecting the process — learning how to document without losing the magic of being there in the first place.

A Year in Frames 📸🌊

A little collection of some of my favourite moments from 2025. Most of these came from my own wandering eye and stubborn little camera habit — but a few gems were lovingly captured by Derek, Beem, Trish, Meg, and Tony.

New Year, Same Place 🌊✨

A fresh calendar, familiar salt on my skin.
Same ocean. Same love for this life. Same heart left somewhere beneath the surface, waiting patiently for me to come visit whenever I can.

Tell me you've had an intense week as a dive instructor without telling me... 🤔

Wetsuit hickeys. That's it. That's the post.

When you're looking after new divers, your head is on a swivel that would make a meerkat dizzy. Eyes on everyone, non-stop. It’s 100% worth it, but my neck is currently filing a formal complaint.

That’s the core of duty of care: when your divers feel safe, they relax. When they relax, they fall in love with the ocean. I’ll take the neck chafing every single time to give someone that moment.

Chumphon Pinnacle and Green Rock delivered. Obviously. ✨

Yesterday I got to do something I don't do nearly enough — go fun diving. No teaching. No briefing. Just me, Logan, Beth, Mike, a collection of cameras, and two of Koh Tao's best sites doing what they do best.

First stop : Chumphon for the schools. But not the usual scad — today we had a massive school of small silver fish doing something I've genuinely never seen quite like this. Constantly diving down then swimming upward with their little mouths wide open, filter feeding on nutrients from the seasonal Gulf upwelling. Over and over. Frantically. Gleefully.

They looked exactly like students doing emergency swimming ascents and I could not let that go uncommented on.

Obviously I had to join in. Obviously.

Then Green Rock for nudis. Tiny, ridiculous, perfect nudis and slugs that required us to get our faces approximately two centimetres from the reef and question our life choices in the best possible way.

Today we found a miniscule Philine Orca and Logan spotted some Phestilla Viei with their eggs. Had to zoom all the way in on my Sealife to get these ones and they're still hard to see!!

This job is everything. It is also exhausting in ways that are hard to explain to people who don't do it. And there is genuinely no better way to unwind than underwater, with good people, with nothing to do but look at things.

Yesterday was exactly that. 🐠✨

Its my birthday and this one's for the weirdos. 🎂🤪

The ones whose cornbread isn't quite baked all the way to the middle. The ones who took a left turn somewhere and never really looked back. The ones who ended up on a tiny island talking to fish for a living and somehow that's the most normal thing about them.

It's my birthday and I get to say it: I love you. All of you weird, wonderful, half-baked humans.

Fish Facts with Katie O | Parrotfish

The parrotfish is the Andaman Sea reef's most colourful, most important, and least appreciated janitor. 🐠🌊

Here's what this rainbow fish is actually doing while you admire it. Those fused beak-like teeth are built for one job — scraping algae and dead coral from the reef surface. The coral itself passes through the digestive system and comes out the other end as the fine white sand you're standing on. A single parrotfish can produce hundreds of kilograms of sand every year. The beach holiday you just booked was partially constructed by fish poop.

But the sand is almost a side note. By controlling algae growth and removing dead coral tissue, parrotfish keep disease from spreading across the reef and create space for new coral recruitment to happen. Without them the reef tips out of balance fast.

Colourful, essential, and completely modest about it all. Katie O breaks it down. 🎬
