💭 What is Take Back the City?

💛 Take Back the City was formed to develop sustainable solutions to Belfast’s housing crisis. It is a coalition of families in housing stress, supported by international experts in architecture, urban planning, housing policy, and much more.

Take Back The City have developed plans to deliver hundreds of sustainable homes as part of a transformative community-led regeneration project at Mackie’s - a vast, vacant and publicly-owned site in the area of greatest housing need and poverty in Belfast.

We need to address the root causes of distress, reduce antidepressant over-prescribing and invest in accessible, community-based alternatives, giving people clear information, real choices and a meaningful say in their support.

The Give 5: Steps to a Wellbeing Rights Framework offers a blueprint for change, with support from all six main political parties in the Northern Ireland Assembly.
Now it’s time for the Health Minister to turn those commitments into action!

✍️ Join us! Sign the Open Letter before Monday 26 October.

In September, #BuildHomesNow and Take Back the City activist Sean Kane delivered this poem about the human reality of homelessness to a @housing_rights conference…

This morning, at our monthly housing clinic, we heard from people all over the city facing homelessness, intimidation, eviction, mould & damp issues, isolation, and much more.

We know the shocking numbers, with more than 50,000 households on the social housing waiting list, and 33,000 of those experiencing homelessness. But we also know there are personal stories behind each one of those numbers, something that Sean reminds us so powerfully in this poem! 🏠

Go raibh míle maith agaibh to everyone that joined us for the first screening of the new @scathancollective documentary exploring the work of Take Back the City & friends!!

The filmmakers have done an amazing job connecting the dots between homes on Mackie’s, community gardens, and the response to racist pogroms - keep an eye out for more screenings in future! 👀

Huge thanks to @glornamona for hosting it as part of Féile na Carraige, to our panelists for great discussions around the background of the film and where it came from, and to our Rasha for the delicious lunch! 🍛 by @nooneleftbehind_ppr

Young people in Anaka 16+ continue to be excluded from our broken education system.

After we published our Stranded Dreams report last year, the NI Executive released its first ever 'Refugee Integration Strategy' - a hollow document with no commitments, no action, no strategy.

Since then we have watched as more young people age out of compulsory education. Nothing has changed, and if anything education provision for asylum seekers and refugees has gotten worse. With news of Belfast MET cutting ESOL enrolments for 2026-2027, we ask decision-makers to invest in this integration they speak of.

While young refugees and asylum seekers are denied access to the same education opportunities as everyone else, they are pushed further to the margins of society, and we all lose out on the incredible things they could accomplish.

📎Read our interview with BBC's Robbie Meredith in the link in our bio, and read more about our campaign for equal access to education on @anaka.education link in bio.
