Noormah Jamal is a New York based Multidisciplinary artist. Her practice begins with drawing as a way of thinking through memory, symbolism, and inherited history. Her image making and sculptures are deeply rooted in the oral histories and identity of her community and family.

Sonya Posmentier is a professor and writer in New York City. She is the author of Cultivation and Catastrophe: The Lyric Ecology of Modern Black Literature (2017). Her essays and poems have appeared in The New York Times Book Review, The Yale Review, English Literary History, American Literary History, Public Books, and elsewhere.

Afriti Bankwalla is a Parsi-Zoroastrian researcher, writer, curator, and doll-maker based in Harlem. Her academic and curatorial work, which often focuses on themes surrounding labor, queer vernacular art, and expressions of feminism through DIY or craft-based art practices, is heavily influenced by her previous work as a costume designer for drag queens across Chicago. by @noormah.jamal

My installation Blooms is on view at Wave Hill.

The installation brings together hand-built ceramic figures emerging from gravel, creating a landscape that considers the relationship between people, place, and memory. The work draws from my connection to my hometown of Peshawar, Pakistan, a city whose name translates to “city of flowers,” despite its dry landscape and one shaped by a complex and often difficult socio-political history of colonialism, conflict, migration, and displacement. In Blooms, I imagine the people who inhabit the city as its flowers, each emerging from and belonging to the landscape in their own way. The surfaces of the sculptures are carved with individual terrains, allowing each figure to hold fragments of place, memory, and lived experience.
The installation runs through October 19.

📍 Wave Hill, Bronx
📅 On view through October 19, 2026

Dancing weeds.
Oil pastel and colour pencils on arches paper.

This does not photograph well.

Nor this.good texture. Not true colour.
But I’ve been here 5 years now.

And this week have gotten into daily drawing that’s feeling rather generative.

So that’s a positive even though this isn’t photographing well.

Maybe I should title it non-photogenic dancing weeds. by @noormah.jamal

Nafisa Rizvi reviews ‘Geography of Memory’ a group show held at Canvas Art Gallery between May 5th -14th, 2026. The participating artists include Ruby Chishti, Noormah Jamal, Usaydh Agha and Mustafa Mohsin.

“It is interesting that all four artists are diasporic and they address concerns that are universal, no matter what their pictorial vocabulary or mode of questioning. And we have to begin to view cerebral art like the art shown here in the larger scheme of things. Some art critics believe art has a wider pluralistic and global role which is diversification and heterogeneity so that it may be absorbed into mainstream culture. Artists could work towards this goal.” @nafisarizvi
