It is heartbreaking when children are taught that transgender people are bad, dangerous, or that they kidnap children. Words like these can shape a child’s mind and create fear and hatred toward people they have never even known.

I grew up with some of these same beliefs. As a child, I was afraid of transgender people and believed many negative things about them. I never imagined that one day I would grow up, understand my own identity, and realize that I am a transgender woman myself.

Then I understood something important: transgender people are not defined by stereotypes. They are human beings, capable of kindness, love, compassion, and respect—just like anyone else.

The things parents tell their children, and the way transgender people are sometimes portrayed in films and media, can have a deep and lasting impact. When lies and harmful stereotypes are repeated, they can create fear and discrimination in society.

Children deserve to learn that differences are not something to fear. They deserve truth, understanding, and humanity—not prejudice taught to them before they are even old enough to understand it.
