This trail has eaten away at my soul since I was a teenager, always hiking it and thinking “I could do that.” It wasn’t until recently that I saw some other people ride it that I decided it was time to give it a go. This was by far the best ride I’ve done in years:The right length, elevation, amount of downhill, and high alpine views. My $80 DIY bike-on-a-bike rack my BMW G310GS. It worked very well for transporting my new Specialized Enduro, and even managed an intermediate-level dirt road to my campground. Thanks so much to all the friendly people of Telluride who came and chatted to me and gave me words of encouragement 😅 and to @dustbunnysoup , who’s NRS strap will be sticking with me as a momento 😁 (and because it’s way sturdier than the ones you find normally!)#mtb #advrider #adventuretravel #dualsport #womenwhoride by @noragoneriding

The conclusion:edit: just discovered they’re 80/20s… I was too hard on them 😂) Ok, it’s to be expected, and I’m a newbie to this bike. The stock 70/30 tires that come with the BMW G310GS are horrible for off-road. I just didn’t think they’d be as bad as they were. I thought on fire roads and chill gravel it would be alright, but even that, I felt like I was riding on marbles. I let out a bit of air for more traction, which helped a little bit, but it’s clear to me that I won’t be riding anything hardcore until I get new tires.#bmwg310gs #advrider #adv #motorcyclegear #dualsportadv by @noragoneriding

For context: I haven’t ridden much in the US, especially off-road. So far, it’s felt easier and safer than riding in Zambia (due to ruralness, not the people), but I like to prep for the worst. I’m on a 2023 BMW G310GS Rally E, and I’ll be on Jeep track and roads through deserts and mountains. Maybe some single track if I’m feeling comfortable. Camping, maybe I’ll treat myself to an Airbnb at some point 😁#advrider #adv #solofemaletraveler #overland #travel by @noragoneriding

Here’s what I didn’t know when I first started riding adv:1) textiles, not leather2) ride small or light bikes first and work your way up- they don’t break as easily when you drop them. Starting out on a Klr 650 was a mistake for my height and the kind of riding I wanted to do.3) motorcycles take muscles — don’t assume you don’t need fitness to ride. I thought it would be easy since I was coming from endurance sport. Build strength, endurance, and bone density.4) ride with friends who have patience… and maybe don’t make your first ever trip an 8000km, like I did. by @noragoneriding

I was nervous about the Durango to Albuquerque stretch because I couldn’t find any good off-road routes, and I thought I’d end up on the highway for the whole ride.
