Career advice I wish someone told me earlier
Work, growth, job search + figuring it all out as we go.

Hi, 🙋🏽‍♀️ I’m Deborah Akhere, a Marketing and Communications Strategist.

I help brands communicate clearly through content marketing and social media strategy.

I also help professionals understand their experience and communicate their value with confidence, especially when they’re navigating growth, change, or transition.

One thing I wish I knew earlier in my career is this:
being capable is not enough if you can’t clearly express what you bring.

So I’m showing up more intentionally to help people bridge the gap between what they know, what they’ve done, and how they communicate it.

If you know you’re capable but struggle to express it clearly in how you speak about your work, your experience, and your journey, this space is for you ✨

Job applications can be exhausting, but sometimes the small things really do matter. Here are a few I’ve noticed recently. by @noriahoptics

Sometimes growth looks like getting better at what you do.

And sometimes, it looks like admitting you don’t want to do it anymore.

You’re allowed to learn more about yourself, change direction, and choose again.

Your career can evolve as you do🤎 by @noriahoptics

Good opportunities rarely come out of nowhere.

Sometimes they’re the result of the work you’ve been doing, the relationships you’ve built, and how well people understand what you bring to the table.

A few things worth being intentional about as you grow your career🤎

Save this for later.

Somewhere between strategy, partnerships, newsletters, data and experimenting with AI, I found myself thinking about how much our careers can change when we allow ourselves to keep learning.

August Wrapped: Career Edition, and the one thought I’m carrying with me into September.

LinkedIn is one of those things we know we should be using better, but somehow we just leave our profiles there 😭

So I put together a few things that can actually make your profile work harder for your career.

Maybe this is your sign to finally update yours too.

Job searching can make you feel like you need to do everything.

Apply everywhere. Rewrite everything. Check LinkedIn again. Refresh your email. Question whether you’re even qualified.

If I had to job search again, there are a few things I’d do very differently.

Not because I have it all figured out, but because some things make an already exhausting process harder than it needs to be.

Feedback isn’t always easy to hear, but learning how to receive it is an important part of growing in your career.

You don’t have to agree with everything you hear. The goal is to listen, think, take what is useful, and use it to get better.

At 20, I thought career growth was mostly about doing more, more courses, more certifications.

At 30, I’m learning it’s actually about doing what matters the most.

Here’s Part 2 — the things I wish someone had told me earlier:

1. You don’t need to be everywhere.
Being visible is not the same as being valuable. At some point, you stop chasing presence and start protecting your focus.

2. Your career won’t reward how busy you look.
It rewards clarity. The person who knows what they do and does it well will always move further than the one doing everything.

3. Saying yes to everything will delay you.
Not because opportunities are bad, but because direction matters more than exposure. Some yeses are just distractions in disguise.

4. You will outgrow versions of yourself that once worked.
That CV you were proud of at 23 may feel small at 30. That’s not failure, that’s growth. Don’t cling to outdated versions of you.

5. No one is coming to notice your effort the way you expect.
You will need to learn how to translate effort into visibility, and visibility into opportunity. Quiet work is good, but silent careers struggle.

6. You are allowed to slow down without falling behind.
Not everything urgent is important. Not everything fast is right for you.

If you’re in your 20s reading this, I hope some of these lessons stay with you.

And if you’re already here in your 30s, I hope they remind you that there’s still room to grow, pivot, and try again.

Wherever you are in your journey, I’m rooting for you🫶🏽
