Partner racing doesn’t always go as planned. @permanentrecess and I had a bit of an issue early into Stage 1 of the @ozstagerace

“These wheels are rated ‘E,’ for everyone.”

If I remember anything from the Oz Stage Race it’s that I laughed a ton. Whether we were hanging out at the Airbnb with Colin and Harley, drinking margaritas with Marion and Kelli, Pete catching us during the race, or Jackky and I keeping ourselves entertained during the race by pointing out random things, like Big Foot and waterfalls.

I’m grateful for Jackky always reminding me that this is all for fun. That podiums are cool and all but we’ll remember crossing the river with the guys, one-liners that Harley says and Jackky says on repeat, randomly seeing my buddy, Marion, and getting to race with her, discovering new trails with my favorite person, coming home without any injuries or mechanicals, and crossing the finish line with Jackky “making it rain.”

There’s something to be said about racing on pure power, which is what our competition did, and they did it well. But we raced smooth, communicated clearly, stayed upright, and found ways to laugh.

I wouldn’t have had half as much fun if it wasn’t for Jackky, @noridearound, and @world_rideuz by @noridearound

Zen and the art of team racing - Stage 2 at @ozstagerace

I’m terrible at team sports. I never officially joined them when I was a kid and when I finally got into sports, I joined one of the most solo sports—cycling.

I say “terrible” because I’m too attached to results, have very little patience, and zero chill. And that’s even when I’m not relying on a second person to cross the finish line. Today tested my teammate-ness and I tried my absolute best to continue encouraging and supporting Jackky on a tough stage for him.

But today wasn’t our day. There was more climbing than what Jackky can suffer through back-to-back.

I was riding the wheel of our competition but started dropping Jackky in the process, so I slowed down for him to catch up (since we’re racing as a team). And we ended up behind that team by like, 17 minutes. They completely kicked our asses.

And I get it. Climbing isn’t Jackky’s strength. And I slowed us down yesterday because the wet roots and rocks sketched me out.

So, I’m learning. Learning that being on a team means honoring the strengths and weaknesses of each other, knowing I’ll be better at climbing than Jackky and that he’ll drop me the minute the trail descends, not taking shit so seriously, and remembering that this is supposed to be fun.

I’m proud of both of us for both taking on this new course, together. Neither of us knew what to expect out here and we’re rolling with the punches. Tomorrow’s a new day and we’re going into it with short term memory. by @noridearound

Stage 1 at the @ozstagerace done & muddied.

Let’s just say I wasn’t prepared for most of this. It rained the entire time we raced. I was soaked and covered in mud. Everything was slick. Rocks, roots, my brake levers.

Whenever I pushed down on my pedals, the water sloshed around in my shoes.

The slippery roots and rocks had me second-guessing my bike handling skills.

I’m not used to racing in these conditions so it tested my resilience.

People were getting flats left and right. What I’ve learned over the years of stage racing is that it isn’t just about power, which a lot of us rely on. It’s also about racing smart. Jackky and I communicated, stuck together, chose safe lines, laughed, and encouraged each other. And that made all the difference. 🤘🏼🖤

Although my race was riddled with mechanical issues, and I was 30min slower than my 2024/2025 times, I managed to PR all 3 of the major climbs on this course… the Tabaguache, Windmill and Bangs Canyon.

With all 3 kids in athletics, helping coach my daughter with her own racing, a wife that’s into running and a demanding career… Finding the time to truly train for these events is becoming increasingly more difficult. I’m honestly just thankful that our family schedule was open enough for me to be able to come back to @gjridesandvibes and take on the #filthy40 for a 3rd straight year.

Cactus Cup Day 1 - 1st
Cactus Cup Day 2 - 1st
Cactus Cup Overall - 1st

I’m giving myself credit where credit is due. Having a chronic illness for 21 years has made living so much harder than it needs to be, especially when it comes to racing.

Having less energy and more pain than my competitors means doing more with less. It means never letting my illness take control. And it means knowing I start my day with less in the tank than most people.

Day 1 was brutal. Going from 60°F weather to 90°F kicked everyone’s ass but with a chronic illness, it set me back further. I couldn’t eat without my digestive system protesting. My head was killing me, I lost my voice, and I barely slept.

Day 2, I wasn’t sure if I’d even make it to the start line without having to run to the toilet. I couldn’t get a full breath with my asthma, but that’s life.

I lined up with the other racers determined to give it all that I had.

And race after race, my body continues to push through its limitations. And damn, if I’m not grateful for all that it does for me. by @noridearound
