POSTS STORIES REELS

Ahead of London Gallery Weekend, we are pleased to speak with Marine Saint (@marine.saint) for the @financialtimes, sharing our candid thoughts on navigating London as an emerging gallery alongside a community of women whose work I greatly admire.

Our upcoming exhibition with inimitable Eve Yifan Jiang (@eveyifanjiangstudio) opens tomorrow. This marks the final presentation at our current space, and we return this autumn in our new location (nearby!) with an even more expansive program. Thank you for joining us on this exciting journey. 💘

A new venue, home to a commercial gallery, a non-profit and an artist-run space, will open in central London this month. Flatmates 37, where three distinct entities will operate closely co-operative programmes, takes its name from the shared living arrangements that for many define life in London, and describes itself as reimagining “shared tenancy as a collective lifeline”.

In pooling their resources, NORITO (@noritogallery), Teaspoon Projects (@teaspoonprojects) and s t a r c h (@starch.sg) hope to mitigate the risks of being sole leaseholders. Located on Fitzrovia’s Foley Street, a stone’s throw from local galleries including Edel Assanti, Josh Lilley and Niru Ratnam, the initiative comes explicitly in response to the growing financial precarity that comes with operating a space—or renting a home—in the capital.

“With so many galleries closing, the situation in London is not super great,” Gigi Surel (@gigisurel_), whose non-profit curatorial initiative Teaspoon Projects has until now consisted of pop-ups in existing galleries, told Ocula. “Of course there are new spaces opening, but I think the future is collaboration; that’s the sustainable way to do it.”

We are delighted to present a charcoal-based body of work by Soryun Ahn (@soryun_ahn) at Minor Attractions (@minor.attractions) this October, following her solo exhibition with the gallery last May.

At the core of Ahn’s practice is a continuous, open-ended staging where myth, dream, and personal history are re-assembled on paper and canvas. Anchoring the presentation at the Newman hotel is a monumental 2022 charcoal work on paper (pictured), which encapsulates her signature ”mystery“—a world bound not by linear logic, but by a tense, atmospheric presence that excavates form directly out of darkness.

London-based Venezuelan artist Francisca Sosa López explores materiality and process through shifting definitions of home, migration, femininity and cultural contrast. Working with materials that can travel back and forth across the Atlantic, she extends drawing into thread, beads and textile, making portability part of the work's relationship to place.

Questions of who or what occupies the centre shift again in Chok Si Xuan’s ( @sixuannn ) installations. Working with found electronics and industrial materials, Chok looks to cybernetics and the feedback systems connecting humans, living organisms and machines. Her environments resist a stable hierarchy between body and apparatus, organic and manufactured, allowing agency to circulate through the systems she constructs. If home can be understood as a network of relations rather than a fixed site, Chok pushes that network beyond the human, towards the objects, technologies and organisms with which we continually share space.

Edition of 5 + 1 AP

Made in the Kuşmer Highlands in northern Turkey, where Yıldıran’s family has roots, the Dispossessed series emerge from a landscape to which the artist is deeply connected yet cannot fully lay claim. Women, animals and the landscape form a collective presence within images that are tender and uncanny, marked by histories of gendered inheritance and dispossession.

Mithra Jeevananthan’s ( @rnithra ) works explore speculative ecologies and chimeric spaces. Through sculpture and installation, she combines references to flora, fauna, insects, and biological systems with industrial materials such as welded metal, plastics, readymade objects, laser-cut elements, and fabricated structures. These fragments are distorted, reconstructed, and brought together to form unfamiliar habitats that resist fixed interpretation. The works consider how imagined environments might develop their own systems and relationships, creating spaces that feel simultaneously beautiful, unsettling, and difficult to classify. 𝘞𝘦𝘭𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘔𝘺 𝘐𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥 is an ongoing exploration of world-building through mutation, transformation, and the possibility of landscapes that exist somewhere between reality and fiction.

The work is part of 𝒮𝑜𝒻𝓉 𝒮𝑒𝓇𝓋𝑒 up now at Flatmates 37 and runs till the 14th November 2026.

Opening times: Wednesday - Saturday, 12 - 6 pm

As the first exhibition at Flatmates 37, 𝒮𝒪𝐹𝒯 𝒮𝐸𝑅𝒱𝐸 makes its position clear: loosen the centre; belonging is something we make together.

Shared by NORITO, starch and Teaspoon Projects, Flatmates 37 takes both its name and structure seriously: three independent programmes inhabiting one space. Rather than operating as a gallery with a singular curatorial voice, it is conceived as a place of cohabitation – with a rotating programme of exhibitions by each of its three ‘flatmates’, punctuated by collective exhibitions such as 𝒮𝒪𝐹𝒯 𝒮𝐸𝑅𝒱𝐸.
