Julian Lage returned to Portland to a sell out house at the Newmark Theatre. Lage and is terrific quartet were brought to town by PDX Jazz as part of their fall season. Lage is an amazing guitar stylist drawing on multiple strands - all combined into a sound all his own. He and his band played for more than 90 minutes almost with stop. Fabulous show a venue that fit him like a glove. @pdxjazz @jlage @newmark_theatre taken in Newmark Theatre by @normederphoto

Oct. 21 ~ PEOPLE BEHIND THE MUSIC

Selections from the JWF Artist Portrait Project

Join us for the Free Artist Reception feat. Live Music by Mary Flower & Leon Cotter

Every music community is built by people - those on stage and the many others whose work makes the music possible. PEOPLE BEHIND THE MUSIC presents a small, curated selection of their portraits, offering a glimpse of the remarkable range of people whose creativity, labor, and commitment sustain our region’s musical life.

Launched in 2020 by the Jeremy Wilson Foundation (JWF) in collaboration with photographer Norm Eder, the JWF Artist Portrait Project has grown to include more than 500 musicians, producers, promoters, venue operators, stage crew, and other members of the music community across Oregon and Southwest Washington.

The project reflects JWF’s commitment to the people behind the music. Since 2010, the Jeremy Wilson Foundation has supported musicians and music industry workers facing health-related challenges through financial assistance, guidance to other available resources, and help accessing and navigating health care. The portrait project extends that spirit of support: every participant receives professional photographs they may use to promote their own work at no cost.

I had the pleasure of hearing and photographing Sofi Nava at the Montavilla Jazz Fest in early September. One thing led to the next and today Sofi joined me in my studio for a Jeremy Wilson Foundation Artists Portrait Project photo session. Sofi arrived in Portland five years ago from Venezuela. Today she is one of Dan Balmer's students at Lewis and Clark. She performs around town and when not gigging or hanging out at LC with Dan, she teaches at a local music school. @sofinavamusic @jeremywilsonfoundation @dbalmer1 @lewisandclarkcollege @montavillajazzfest taken in Garden Home - Raleigh Hills, Portland, Oregon by @normederphoto

Dianne Reeves and Dr. Branford Marsalis at Revolution Hall tonight, sponsored by PDX Jazz. These two icons of the modern jazz scene are touring in support of a new recording they created in honor of the 100th anniversary of John Coltrane's birth. The sold out show was an amazing display of musical power and sophistication that few artists could have pulled off. @pdxjazz @diannereeves @revolutionhall @branfordmarsalisquartet @branfordmarsalis taken in Revolution Hall by @normederphoto

Dick Brainard, who passed away recently, was for many years the manager of the Waterfront Blues Festival's Zydeco stage. He was well-known for inviting anyone close to him as he stood on the side of the stage to dance. I shot this photo of Dick and an unidentified in 2011. Dick has left his many friends to remember him as they dance to his memory. @waterfrontblues taken in Tom McCall Waterfront Park by @normederphoto

Dylan May will be in Becker Canyon Studio in November but tonight he and the Message performed at Alberta Street Pub. Dylan teaches fourth grade in Vancouver and is the son of Tom May, whose career as a folk musician is the stuff of legends. Madison Rose last night at Clyde's. Maddie was in my studio earlier in the day, and mentioned her show. A few hours later I shot a few images of her performing at Clyde's. The place was hopping as Maddie and her terrific band cruised through a few sets of 80s sweetness. @maddie_hutt @clydesprimerib @bfox_production taken in Clyde's Prime Rib Restaurant & Bar by @normederphoto

Madison Rose, who is has been hiding in plain sight, joined me in my Becker Canyon Studio today. Maddie, as she I known to her friends, has made a major splash in our local scene with her Tribute to Sade and her own R&B band. Kudos to Brian Foxworth for encouraging Maddie to take the leap from singing in church to entertainment stages all around Portland. She too is now part of the Jeremy Wilson Foundation's Artist Portrait Project. @maddie_hutt @bfox_production @jeremywilsonfoundation taken in Garden Home - Raleigh Hills, Portland, Oregon by @normederphoto

Nick Moss and his band, featuring Jason Ricci, made their first appearance in Portland last night at The Jack London Revue, produced by Soul'd Out Music. Nick has been a standout practitioner of the Chicago Blues for more than 30 years. He was joined on stage by stellar harp-player, Jason Ricci who joined the band for this tour. The audience was packed with Portland blues royalty and through evening several took turns on stage - Jimi Bott, Kim Field, and Kevin Selfe. It was another reminder of the depth and quality of our local blues community. taken in Jack London Revue by @normederphoto
