I spent the last three years of my father’s life taking care of him and getting to know him in a way I never had before. I was there through it all, right up until his last breath. I remember trying to look away, but my mother told me, “Don’t look away. You’re a man. Look at your father.” So I stayed. I looked at him, held his hand, and held onto that moment until the very end.

My father once told me, Out of all my children, you’re the one I never have to worry about. Back then, those words hurt me. I wanted him to worry about me, to show me that he cared. But now I understand. It wasn’t that he cared any less. It was his way of telling me that he trusted me, believed in me, and knew I would be okay. by @normontreal
