I always post the version of me that doesn’t look as sick as I really am.
That’s changing.

Most days now I’m spending in a haze… crawling, clinging to life.
I’m forced to sleep most of the day.
And when I am awake, I’m in a haze… like I’m not fully here.
Almost partially comatose at times.
Getting through the day hour by hour… sometimes minute by minute.

This all hit after a bad virus… like my immune system flipped back on and won’t calm down.

My brain feels like it’s giving out on me.
I can still do some things… but it comes with a cost—everything takes extreme effort and often leads to crashes afterward.
Sunlight can set me back.
The sound of my newborn’s cries can overload my system and drop me.
Even feeling love can knock me down for hours—because my brain can’t properly regulate sensory and emotional input anymore.
When I push past my limits, it can lead to severe mental crashes… even episodes of psychosis from overload.
And losing my mind like this… is one of the most terrifying parts of all of it.

Things that once brought me joy… feel out of reach now.

This is the reality of refractory autoimmune encephalitis.
This is also ME/CFS.
This is what millions live with every day.

The scariest part of this disease isn’t always death…
it’s that it often doesn’t kill you.
It debilitates you.
It takes pieces of you… sometimes almost everything… except your life.
And sometimes that’s even more terrifying than death.

I don’t know if this will get better.

But I will not take the easy way out.
Not while there are still options left.
Not while there is still a fight to be fought.

But what we do today echoes in eternity.
Not in comfort. Not in ease.
But in the choice to stay… when everything around us is breaking.

One day my son will know—
his father never stopped fighting to be here.

And as long as I have my wife, my family, and my son… it’s worth it.

Even if my mind fails me… I’ll still be here for him.

This is what fighting looks like when nobody’s watching.

Though I am mostly bedridden now, I refuse to believe my life has lost all meaning.

This illness has torn through parts of me I once thought could never be touched; my strength, my independence, my future, pieces of my own mind. There are days where my body feels poisoned, my thoughts feel far away, and simply remaining conscious feels like a battle I am losing inch by inch.

ME/CFS is not exhaustion.
It is watching your world slowly disappear while you are still alive enough to grieve it.

It is lying awake in dark rooms while the rest of the world keeps moving without you.
It is fearing every crash may be the one that finally takes everything that remains.
It is surviving symptoms so severe you begin to understand why so many sufferers vanish quietly from life altogether.

But hear me clearly:

We are not weak.

There is nothing weak about enduring a disease that strips people to their foundations and still waking up to face another day inside it.

Some of us have spent months or years fighting this war in silence. Forgotten by the world. Misunderstood by medicine. Trapped inside bodies that no longer feel safe to live in.

And still…
we remain.

Not because this fight is easy.
Not because we are unafraid.
But because somewhere deep beneath the pain, the fear, and the exhaustion, there is still something inside us refusing to surrender completely.

So for ME/CFS Awareness Day, remember the people missing from life because of this disease.

The ones in dark rooms.
The ones fighting to stay conscious.
The ones grieving who they used to be.
The ones barely hanging on, but hanging on nonetheless.

And to every person still surviving this nightmare beside me:

Your endurance matters.
Your existence matters.
And even if all you can do today is survive, then survive with defiance.

Because sometimes surviving one more day in a body that feels like a prison is the bravest thing a human being can do.

So rest if you must.
Grieve what has been taken.
Curse the dark if you need to.

But do not mistake your suffering for surrender.

As long as there is still breath in your lungs and even the faintest ember left inside your spirit, then the fight is not over yet.

You’ve walked through too much darkness to stop now. Keep going—the light is closer than it feels.

We may fade,
but we are not extinguished.
Even like this,
there is still something in us
worth holding onto.

Fighting for my life, one day at a time.
Support if you can 🙏

Day 13.
Chemo today—to quiet the war inside my own mind.
Not my final stand… but I can feel the line getting closer. Thank you all for sticking by side through it all.

Day 12.

Refractory autoimmune encephalitis.

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis.

The body lies still, but the battle does not.

The light is too sharp. The world too loud. Even in darkness, the storm presses in—burning, distant, unreal. I’m losing connection to everything around me… to people, to moments… even to myself. Memories feel far away. My thoughts slip through my hands like sand. I catch myself forgetting who I am, like pieces of me are quietly disappearing into the fog.

I have brief windows where I can think clearly… brief moments where I can write, where I can reach out like this. And then it slips again.

This takes everything.

It strips away what it means to be human—emotion, connection, clarity, identity. The things that make life feel real… feel gone. I’m left watching it all from a distance I can’t close.

This is not exhaustion.
This is not weakness.

This is war inside my own brain.

This is what they don’t see.

This is what it costs.

But hear me clearly—this is not surrender.

A warrior is forged in the depths of suffering, not in the comfort of ease.

Even as my mind flickers… even as I fade in and out of myself—I am still here. Still breathing. Still holding the line.

If this is the fight meant to take me, it will have to earn it.

If this is the end, then let it come. I will meet it standing, with honor in my heart and the gates Valhalla before me.

I carried this as far as I could, through a body that was already starting to give way. I pushed past limits I should have listened to, holding onto something that kept taking more than it gave. My doctor told me plainly; if we don’t find something that works, I may only have 1–2 years of decent function before severe disability sets in.

That changes things. It makes the cost real. I’ve given everything I had to this, and I don’t have anything left to spend on it. So I’m setting it down; not in defeat, but because I understand where it was meant to end.

This isn’t a sad goodbye, it’s the kind of ending a warrior earns… a final laying down of arms, and a welcome into a final rest.

Goodbye my friends, and thank you for all of the support you gave me.

Hope doesn’t show up when things are going well, it shows up when everything feels ruined and empty. When you have nothing left, something small in you still lights up and keeps you going anyway.

I’ve fought too hard to get my life back to let someone else decide my fate. The treatment that helps me stay standing isn’t a privilege to be taken away it’s the reason I’m still here fighting.
